Andrew Cavenagh makes no sense at Rangers as Danny Rohl guides to win vs Hearts

Danny Rohl was vindicated with his team selection as Rangers beat Hearts 4-2 in the William Hill Premiership on Sunday.

Derek McInnes’ team travelled to Ibrox on 15 February, and Gers fans initially weren’t happy to see Youssef Chermiti in the starting lineup.

The former Everton striker ended up scoring a hat-trick for the Light Blue, who have reduced the gap to two points with Hearts in the league.

With the German manager making a few other high-profile changes to his starting lineup against the Jam Tarts, Andrew Cavenagh may have made a glaring error in the winter transfer window.

Rangers miss trick with Djeidi Gassama in transfer window

Monaco were interested in Djeidi Gassama in the winter transfer window, with the Ligue 1 club ready to take the winger on loan until the end of the season with a £10million obligation to buy.

The Gers ultimately rejected the offer from Stade Louis II, but the Ibrox hierarchy may regret that now.

After a strong start to the 22-year-old’s spell at the Light Blues, there has been a massive dip in his form in recent months.

Gassama didn’t start for the Glaswegian outfit in what was one of their most important games of the season against Hearts, indicating his position in Rohl’s plans for the rest of the season.

Cavenagh’s apparent decision to keep hold of the former Sheffield Wednesday star now arguably makes no sense, with his value surely going down if the German manager continues to stick with Andreas Skov Olsen and Mikey Moore up front.

While Gassama did come off the bench in the 88th minute to replace the Tottenham loanee and provided the assist for Chermiti’s hat-trick, the young forward undoubtedly has an uphill battle to climb to re-establish his importance in the team.

Youssef Chermiti must do more to prove Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises right

Besiktas were reportedly interested in Chermiti in the winter window and were willing to pay £13m for him.

At the time, Rangers fans were certainly wondering why the club didn’t cash in on the former Everton ace, who has had a topsy-turvy spell in Govan, but he was magnificent against Hearts, as shown in the Sofascore graphic below.

While the three goals have changed supporters’ perception of the Portuguese striker slightly, he must find consistency at Ibrox.

Chermiti’s hat-trick will be quickly forgotten in G51 if he puts in stinkers for the Glaswegian outfit in the upcoming matches.
