Why the 49ers’ expenditure at Rangers all makes sense as £18m cash windfall news emerges

The 49ers haven’t shied away from spending money for Rangers this season, and that may be down to the cash they made through the UEFA Europa League last season.

According to the Daily Record on Thursday, a new report from UEFA has said that the 49ers banked just over £18million alone from their Europa League journey that started in the Champions League last campaign.

This included over £6million in TV payments, £4million for qualifying for the competitions, and an extra £2million for performances and how far they reached in the competition.

The other unnamed £6million will most likely be additional bonuses from UEFA for reaching the knockout stages, as the Gers were sent crashing out in the quarter-final by Athletic Bilbao.

When looking at Rangers‘ expenditure this season, it’s even clearer that this £18m boost played a big role in the summer and winter transfer windows.

Why the 49ers deserve a pat on the back for £30m+ spend

Rangers spent around £20million on transfers in the summer, with the likes of Youssef Chermiti, Oliver Antman, and Emmanuel Fernandez all costing the Bears a pretty penny.

But the 49ers didn’t stop their, and deserve credit, because they looked to have egg on their face after letting Kevin Thelwell deal with the incomings in the summer.

In the winter market, the Gers spent over £12million, which has taken their overall spending past £30million for this season, making a push for the Scottish Premiership title possible.

It obviously couldn’t have been done without the extra cash influx from UEFA, but it once again highlights the importance of Danny Rohl’s side being competitive in these competitions.

The dilemma Danny Rohl had with Rangers’ Europa League campaign

Rangers’ Europe League run this year was on to forget, to say the least. But the new findings prove how crucial it is from a financial standpoint to be in these competitions and challenge for success.

After the winter spending, the Bears now seem like the most serious team in the division, and if they miss out on the title, then it’s all down to the poor start they had under Russell Martin.

Rohl couldn’t possibly achieve a good run in the Europa League alongside the success seen in the Scottish Premiership, and it was either one or the other that the German had to put his full focus into.

At the end of the day, it looks like he made the right choice, because even though the draw against Motherwell was disappointing, the Gers still have the strongest squad to push for the top spot in the weeks to come.
