Steven Thompson blown away by ‘exceptional’ Rangers moment in draw vs Motherwell

Rangers’ Scottish Premier League hopes took a dent, as Motherwell notched a late equaliser against the Bears on Wednesday evening.

Kris Boyd felt Rangers were disjointed during a set piece in the lead-up to the goal, and ultimately that has cost them in the end.

Danny Rohl would have been hoping to keep pace with league leaders Hearts, but instead, they have fallen further behind.

Hearts’ win against Hibernian means their lead is extended to five points.

The Glasgow side still have hope of landing league title number 56, with Michael Stewart and Derek Ferguson claiming it was a good draw in the end.

Additionally, Steven Thompson was left in awe of one moment during the game.

Steven Thompson raves over Nicolas Raskin goal

While the result for Rangers was not what was needed, Nicolas Raskin was impressive against Motherwell, and the Belgian will be delighted with his goal.

Overall, it was a well-worked move, with multiple players playing a key role in the eventual outcome.

Rohl’s side broke the Motherwell press with good movement and pinpoint passing, as Nasser Djiga and Tochi Chukwuani got them out of danger outside their own box.

However, Mohamed Diomande may take most of the plaudits, as his solo run to set up Raskin came from within his own half.

Even Chris Sutton was left stunned by Diomande’s run.

The Ivorian then laid it on a plate for the midfielder, who made a brilliant run of his own behind the Motherwell defence.

Thompson, speaking on BBC Sportscene on Wednesday evening, was left highly impressed, stating, “It was a blow to Rangers, but it was them who took the lead through Nico Raskin, and it is an exceptional goal.”

Rangers must win crucial title clash against Hearts

With Hearts taking a bigger advantage at the top, the G51 outfit cannot afford to lose against the Edinburgh club this weekend.

A win for Derek McInnes’ side would see them take an eight-point advantage, and with the games whittling down, that gap could be too big to overcome.

Rohl would have been targeting Sunday’s match as the game to go level with Hearts, and it was possible if they had won in North Lanarkshire.

However, now he will simply have to settle for keeping within touching distance and putting the pressure on the Jam Tarts.

It is certainly shaping up to be a crucial tie in the Scottish Premier League title race, and with the game at Ibrox, the Gers will surely have confidence they can get a win over the line.
