‘Danny Rohl will send shivers down Rangers fans spines with Thelo Aasgaard vs Motherwell’
Danny Rohl shouldn’t start Thelo Aasgaard for Rangers against Motherwell in the William Hill Premiership on Wednesday.
The Gers will travel to Fir Park on 11 February, and the German manager faces a key decision on his midfield selection.
While Nicolas Raskin, Tochi Chukwuani and Mohamed Diomande make sense as a midfield trio, the former Sheffield Wednesday boss may be tempted to start with a number 10.
If Aasgaard does start for the Glaswegian outfit in North Lanarkshire, the gamble might backfire, considering the Norway international hasn’t lived up to expectations so far.
Thelo Aasgaard doesn’t deserve Rangers start vs Motherwell
Daily Record journalist Scott McDermott believes Aasgaard has failed to take his opportunities at the Gers so far.
The Light Blues signed the 23-year-old from Luton Town for £3.5million last summer, but the fans at Ibrox are yet to see him consistently perform for the team.
While the attacking-midfielder got an assist coming off the bench for the Glaswegian outfit in the Scottish Gas Scottish Cup in the 8-0 win over Queen’s Park, Rohl undoubtedly has better options at his disposal.
Writing in the Daily Record on 11 February, McDermott said, “But there will be a temptation for the manager to pick a number 10. And if he’s thinking about putting his faith in Aasgaard for that role — it will send a shiver down the spine of Rangers fans. The Norwegian has been given an ample amount of chances in this side and — in the main — has failed to take them.”

The journalist added, “In big games, especially away from home, he’s gone missing. In that specific position, a player must impact and influence the game. Aasgaard simply hasn’t done that enough. And if he gets the nod again at Fir Park, supporters will fear it’s a decision that could backfire on Rohl.”
Aasgaard’s signing initially invoked excitement among supporters in Govan, but they haven’t seen enough quality from the midfielder when the going gets tough.
Danny Rohl has another selection dilemma at Fir Park
Rohl has solidified the Gers’ defence since coming in to replace Russell Martin at Ibrox, but there are still evident signs of frailties.
While James Tavernier scored a hat-trick against Queen’s Park, the right-back has his critics, especially for his defensive lapses at Rangers.
Dujon Sterling seems fit to start for the Light Blues, and the German manager would certainly be wise to go with the 26-year-old in a crunch fixture at Fir Park.
Motherwell are unbeaten in their last five league matches, and with Tawanda Maswanhise firing in goals, Rohl must ensure his backline can handle that pressure.
