Chris Wilder has lost his mind after what’s been said about Rangers and Joe Rothwell

Joe Rothwell will be hoping to kickstart his career at Sheffield United after leaving Rangers in the winter transfer window.

The Gers signed the Englishman from Bournemouth last summer, and he was arguably one of Kevin Thelwell’s many mistakes during his time as sporting director in G51.

Rothwell left Ibrox late on deadline day, with the EFL Championship side signing him for an undisclosed fee on an 18-month contract.

The 31-year-old was one of the best players for Leeds United in the second flight of English football last season, but his time in South Yorkshire has gone off to a disastrous start.

Rangers situation blamed for Joe Rothwell red card vs Middlesbrough

Rothwell made his debut for Sheffield United against Middlesbrough in the EFL Championship on 9 February, coming on as a substitute in the second half.

The midfielder was subsequently sent off after a nasty challenge on Irishman Alan Browne, lasting 35 minutes on the pitch for Chris Wilder’s team.

After the 2-1 loss, the South Yorkshire side’s manager seemingly blamed ex-Gers star’s lack of minutes at Ibrox as an apparent reason for his challenge on the day.

Speaking to SUTV, Wilder said, “Joe is extremely disappointed with himself, maybe a touch of frustration of a time away not playing first team football. It’s a mistimed tackle and I’ve got no arguments about the decision made by the ref.”

Danny Rohl didn’t really trust Rothwell during his spell in Govan, but it feels a bit baffling to see his lack of game time at the Light Blues being blamed for his mistimed tackle.

The midfielder just wasn’t good enough to make an impact at the Glaswegian outfit, and Wilder seems to have lost his mind with his statement.

Joe Rothwell’s time at Ibrox in numbers

Rangers may have been wise to keep Rothwell due to Connor Barron’s injury, but it looks like Rohl is confident about his options in the middle of the park.

The former Leeds ace made 20 appearances in all competitions for the Gers, providing three assists.

In the William Hill Premiership, the midfielder started in just five of eight games this season, being dribbled past 0.4 times and losing possession 5.5 times per game.

Rothwell’s lack of energy and ability to cope with the physicality and demands of Scottish football didn’t go down well with the Ibrox faithful, and the Glaswegian outfit will feel they made the right call by selling him.
