Tuur Rommens transfer to Rangers inevitable in new price tag reveal

Westerlo couldn’t keep hold of Tuur Rommens after Rangers made an offer to sign him in the winter transfer window.

Francesco Carratta, the Belgian outfit’s technical director, believes it was “impossible” to keep the left-back after the Gers made an approach.

Rommens made an impressive debut against Kilmarnock, replacing Jayden Meghoma in the 65th minute as the Gers won 5-1 at home.

Danny Rohl got three valuable points against Killie, and some of the new signings made a case for themselves for the second half of the season.

Rangers transfer fee for Tuur Rommens can rise

Westerlo sold Rommens to the Gers for an initial fee of around £3.4million.

However, Carratta has revealed that after bonuses, the amount the Ibrox side will pay for the Belgium Under-21 international could rise to approximately £4.3m.

On initial assessment, it looks like the 22-year-old will be well worth the price as the Glaswegian outfit build for the future under Rohl.

Speaking to GVA on 6 February, the Jupiler Pro League’s technical director said, “Impossible. He’s proven himself a valuable asset for three years, with a fantastic mentality and a lot of character. Who are we to stop him? For the lad, it’s an opportunity to take a step forward, and for us, a great showcase.”

Carratta added, “We don’t want to let anyone go for a pittance. €4m for Rommens was a fair price for a player with another year and a half under his contract. Besides, Rangers were the only team that showed interest this winter. With bonuses, that amount could rise to €5m.”

Rommens had to bide his time for his debut at Ibrox after dealing with a fitness issue, but fans are now desperate to see him more.

Danny Rohl still has transfer headache at Ibrox

Rommens will surely be pivotal for Rangers in the title race, with the William Hill Premiership wide open right now.

In the short term, Rohl’s full focus will be on closing the three-point gap with Hearts, but there will undoubtedly be a major dilemma already on his hands for the summer.

Meghoma will return to Brentford after his loan spell ends, and the Light Blues will once again be left with a lack of depth in their backline.

The Glaswegian outfit will surely need a new left-back and another left-footed centre-back in the coming months, but for now, it looks like Rommens will be a big hit in G51, looking at his Sofascore graphic.
