Rangers win vs Kilmarnock highlights baffling Danny Rohl transfer decision

Danny Rohl’s side made light work of Kilmarnock on Wednesday.

Rangers ran out 5-1 winners over Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Wednesday night, in a game that was pretty much settled after the first few minutes.

Kilmarnock defender Dominic Thompson was sent off after just four minutes, after he bundled into Djeidi Gassama inside the penalty area, from which James Tavernier dispatched the resulting spot kick.

It was a result that moved Rangers to within three points of Premiership leaders Hearts, and saw Rohl‘s men massively eat into the Jambos’ goal difference lead too.

Nedim Bajrami left in Ibrox cold despite prime Kilmarnock chance

It was a night to remember for many individuals against Kilmarnock, as Andreas Skov Olsen netted his first Rangers goal, whilst Ryan Naderi came off the bench for his Gers debut.

Meanwhile, Tuur Rommens also capped his debut with an assist, and Oliver Antman potentially rescued his Rangers career with a goal and an assist in a 15-minute cameo from the bench too.

Indeed, Killie’s early red card paved the way for a dominant performance from Rangers, and handed Rohl the chance to blood some of his new signings and hand opportunities to some fringe players.

However, one such player who still couldn’t get a chance to show what he can do in this prime opportunity was Nedim Bajrami, who remained an unused substitute.

The 26-year-old Albanian international has played just 309 minutes of league football this season, and has seen his role reduced from his debut 2024-25 campaign in Glasgow, where he played 44 times.

Rohl decided to keep Bajrami despite transfer interest in him this winter, believing that the versatile midfielder could still play an important role at Ibrox.

However, for him to not even get a chance to come on and play in a situation such as the game against Kilmarnock, would suggest that he’s some way from being in Rohl’s thinking.

Bajrami has too many horses to pass at Rangers now

With the aforementioned arrivals of Skov Olsen and Naderi, as well as Tochi Chukwuani in midfield, Bajrami now has three more quality players on top of Rangers’ already talented crop of attacking options to contend with.

As such, it may well take the injury crisis to end all injury crisis’s for Bajrami to carve out a big role in the remainder of the campaign, and that makes Rangers’ decision to block any transfer exit for him a strange one.

With a handful of players now seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order across the midfield spots, Bajrami may be forced to endure a bench-warming role at best for the rest of the way.
