Agent of Rangers player speaks out as early Ibrox exit mooted

Rabbi Matondo’s agent has spoken out amid suggestions the winger could leave Rangers five months ahead of his contract expiring.

Reports emerged on Tuesday that Rangers were working to terminate Matondo’s deal, which is due to expire in July.

Matondo has endured a torrid time of things at Ibrox and has made just one league appearance this season, coming as a substitute against Aberdeen last month.

Tearing up Matondo’s contract would allow the Wales international to find a club outside of the transfer window due to becoming a free agent.

It would also ensure his wages are off Rangers‘ books for the next five months.

However, his agent has now provided some clarity on the situation.

Rabbi Matondo exit situation takes a twist

As per Mark Hendry via Substack, Matondo’s agent has rubbished suggestions Rangers wanted to rip up his deal last month.

Exactly where this now leaves the former Schalke 04 players is unclear, but he surely accepts he is better off away from Rangers.

Danny Rohl is already settled on his favoured core group of players and has been able to add to his attack over the past month.

Andreas Skov Olsen and Ryan Naderi will bring some added quality to the final third and ultimately push Matondo further down the pecking order, even if not in direct competition with the two.

It may well be that the Gers continue exploring the possibility of getting rid of Matondo, but that would also require the Welshman to sign off on it.

And as highlighted by the Sofascore graphic above, which shows he goes near 141 minutes per goal or assist for the Gers, he will not be missed.

Rangers exit announced a day after deadline day

The transfer window may now be shut for Scottish clubs in terms of incoming activity, but that is not to say players cannot still leave.

Indeed, Danilo’s exit was belatedly announced by Rangers on Tuesday, with Nicolas Raskin and Jack Butland among those to react to a social media post confirming the news.

Unless Matondo moves on, that will likely be that in terms of business at Ibrox for this season.

The transfer window then reopens again in mid-June, at which point Rohl and Rangers will hope to be back on the top of the Scottish football pyramid.

For that to happen, though, those new recruits brought in need to seriously hit the ground running in order to overtake both Celtic and leaders Hearts.
