Tam McManus can scarcely believe ‘ridiculous’ Rangers incident as figure called out
Rangers were held to a 0-0 draw against Hibernian, with former Hibs man Tam McManus left bemused by one moment in particular.
The Scottish title race is close at the top, with only four points separating the Glasgow side from league leaders Hearts before this weekend’s games.
The G51 outfit would have been looking to continue hunting down Hearts, but Rangers’ failure to score against Hibs has cost them, with the gap widening to six points.
The goalless draw will have no doubt been disappointing for Danny Rohl, but players such as Tochi Chukwuani can be proud of their performances.
Tam McManus calls out referee for Joe Newell yellow card vs Rangers
In the 35th minute of Sunday’s contest, Joe Newell was handed a yellow card for a foul on Nicolas Raskin.
It was an innocuous moment, but one that had gained the attention of former Scottish footballer McManus, who felt it was a great tackle by the midfielder.
McManus said on X: “Ridiculous yellow card for Newell; that was a great tackle, won the ball.“
McManus sarcastically went on to add about referee Matthew MacDermid: “Bar that and the referee missing two blatant corner kicks for Rangers, he’s having a storming first 35 mins.”
While Newell might have been unfortunate to pick up a booking in that incident, he did commit two more fouls during the match and would likely have got himself a yellow anyway.
Why Rangers must still remain confident of title success
After the start to the season under Russell Martin, being in a title race seemed like a pipe dream, but under Rohl, the Gers are certainly contenders.
The six-point gap is not ideal, but there are 14 games left to play, and that includes a game against the league leaders on 15 February.
There is every chance they can close that gap.
In the second stage of the season, the Glasgow club will also play Hearts once more, which means catching up to Derek McInnes’ side in terms of points is in their hands.
If they can continue to keep pace, and beat the current league leaders in both of those games, they give themselves every chance of picking up league title number 56.
