Russell Martin has already told Rangers why they should sign Cameron Archer

Rangers could push to sign Cameron Archer before the transfer deadline.

Danny Rohl is desperate for attacking reinforcements in the final knockings of the winter transfer window.

A deal for Ryan Naderi is stalling, and the Gers could turn to the Southampton man to solve their issues in the forward line.

Russell Martin departed Rangers earlier this season after a nightmare spell in charge, but he knows Archer from his time in charge of the Saints.

What did Martin say about Rangers target Cameron Archer?

Martin has already told the Light Blues why they should sign the ex-Aston Villa forward, although, not directly.

Speaking after his former club signed Archer in 2024, Martin revealed his excitement about working with the ex-England U21 attacker.

He raved about his quality, saying: “He’s a constant threat with his pace and ability to score goals, and will have learned a lot from playing regularly in the Premier League last season. Now it’s up to us to help him develop and showcase how good he can be at this level.

The Gers know what it will take to sign Archer and could seal a deal quickly, according to a report from the Daily Record on 30 January.

Why Archer could be the final piece for Rohl’s title puzzle

The Gers are well and truly back in the title race, and signing Archer could be the edge that they need to beat Hearts and Celtic to the Championship.

The Gers are currently four points off Derek McInnes’ side, and two points above their arch-rivals and the race is expected to go down to the wire, with all three sides firmly in contention.

Youssef Chermiti and Bojan Miovski have not exactly set the world alight in front of goal, and a reliable goalscorer would be the final piece of the puzzle, which could take the club over the line.

If Archer can discover his form in Scottish football, it could be the difference maker and prove to be a masterclass from Rohl and the majority owners, the 49ers Enterprises group and Andrew Cavenagh.

The young forward has only scored two goals in the English second tier this season in 19 appearances, but he has shown that he is able to contribute at that level in previous campaigns.

He has 20 goals and seven assists in 59 appearances in the division, which is a solid record, and his experience could help him adapt to the new surroundings if he makes the move to G51.

All signings come with a gamble, and Martin is persona non grata in Govan, but his judgement is spot on this time around, Archer is a quality player.
