Rangers in driving seat for Cameron Archer transfer as Celtic update emerges

Rangers are considering a loan move for Southampton forward Cameron Archer in the final hours of the winter transfer window.

The Gers have been pursuing a deal for Hansa Rostock striker Ryan Naderi at Ibrox, but the 3. Liga outfit aren’t keen on letting the 22-year-old German striker leave midway through the season.

Archer has emerged as an alternative target for Danny Rohl, with the Light Blues aware they’ll need to cover most of his wages to reach an agreement with the Saints.

The 2 February deadline is right around the corner, and the Glaswegian outfit are apparently working hard and fast to bolster their squad for the second half of the campaign.

Celtic enquire about Cameron Archer before Rangers talks

Celtic were the first Scottish team to express an interest in Archer in January, according to the Daily Record.

The news outlet reports on 31 January that the Gers’ Old Firm rivals had made contact to enquire about the 24-year-old’s availability, but it’s the Ibrox side who are now in advanced talks to sign him.

It’s been claimed that the Light Blues are currently in the driving seat to sign the English striker, as the Hoops haven’t firmed up their interest since their initial approach.

Archer was left out of the Southampton squad to face Stoke City in the EFL Championship on 31 January, which may indicate he could be on the move soon.

Rohl will surely be desperate to add quality to the Glaswegian outfit’s attack, but it remains to be seen whether the Englishman will be the answer to the German manager’s issues, with the Sofascore comparison not really encouraging.

Youssef Chermiti, Bojan Miovski and Danilo have failed to find the back of the net consistently this season, and the need for a quality number nine is evident at the Govan side.

Danny Rohl has only one option as striker needed at Ibrox

Leeds United striker Joel Piroe has been linked with a move to Ibrox, but the Gers don’t seem to be an option for him.

While Rangers fans would’ve thought the links with 49ers Enterprises and Paraag Marathe would’ve helped them get the Suriname international, it doesn’t look like the deal will happen.

Hansa are also dragging their feet in negotiations for Naderi, and it’s uncertain whether the centre-forward will join the Light Blues immediately, but his Sofascore heatmap does highlight why the poacher is wanted in Govan.

Of all the names being reported, Archer seems to be the most realistic attacking target the Glaswegian outfit can get in the coming hours, but the situation in G51 will be worth watching closely.
