Rangers ready to agree cut-price Joe Rothwell exit as Wrexham transfer news emerges

Wrexham have joined to race to sign Rangers outcast Joe Rothwell ahead of the winter transfer window closing.

Rothwell has been strongly linked with a Rangers exit this window after struggling for playing time since arriving at Ibrox last summer.

Sheffield United and Derby County have both been credited with an interest in Rothwell, who has just five Scottish Premiership starts to his name this term.

And the pair have now been joined by a third Championship club south of the border in ambitious Wrexham.

Trio of clubs circle as Joe Rothwell can leave Rangers on the cheap

Rothwell’s arrival at Rangers last summer was considered a coup of sorts given the midfielder played an important part in Leeds United’s promotion to the Premier League.

However, that has been far from the case. Rothwell has played just one minute of football since the start of November, with Danny Rohl clearly not taking to him.

Now, according to Alan Nixon via his personal Patreon account on Friday, Wrexham are the latest club to circle for Rothwell.

Wrexham are after more players to pad out their squad for their own promotion charge to the top flight of English football.

And it is reported that Rangers are willing to let Rothwell leave for a knockdown price.

While the 31-year-old’s wages have proved an issue for other clubs, that is unlikely to be the case for Wrexham if they are ready to push ahead with an offer.

Who will be next to leave Rangers after Rothwell?

As brutal as it is, it is fair to say Rothwell’s surely imminent exit will not be felt at all at Ibrox.

Rothwell hasn’t played at all in nearly three months now and is just eating up wages.

As highlighted by the Sofascore graphic further up the page, Rothwell has quite simply offered nothing to Rangers.

Getting him off the books therefore makes perfect sense, even if that comes at a financial loss for the Gers.

Other names are also expected to leave Govan in the coming days or indeed hours, with Findlay Curtis top of that list.

Danny Rohl confirmed as much, in fact, when revealing after Thursday’s loss to Porto that a decision over a loan exit is to be made within 48 hours.

Danilo is another who should be gone before the end of Monday, with the forward in the Netherlands ahead of a return to Eredivisie.
