Dan Neil completes medical as Rangers transfer hunt concludes

Rangers’ hopes of signing Sunderland academy star Dan Neil have received a blow.

Danny Rohl’s Rangers are trying to strengthen their squad before the winter transfer window draws to a close on 2 February.

While Rangers ace Danilo looks set to leave on loan, the Gers are ‘desperate’ to bring in some extra quality as the Scottish Premiership title race with Celtic and Hearts heats up.

Rangers have been attempting to bring in Sunderland’s Neil for weeks now, but it seems their efforts may fall short.

Incidentally, Ipswich Town have been vying for Neil’s signature with Rangers, and now a telling development has occurred.

Rangers set for transfer window disappointment

Despite Rangers’ reported interest in out-of-favour Sunderland midfielder Neil, Championship promotion-hopefuls Ipswich are closing in on his capture.

On Monday afternoon, Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie stated that Neil was having a medical at Ipswich ahead of a possible loan move.

With the 24-year-old’s contract up in the summer, it effectively means he has played his last game for boyhood club Sunderland.

Now, it seems this move is on the brink of being completed after allegedly passing his medical late on Monday afternoon.

Neil has been a regular for Sunderland over the years, as he helped the club get promoted out of League One, before making the jump to the Premier League last term.

He has played 200 times for the Black Cats but just three of those have come this season. Now, it seems, his Sunderland chapter is about to end.

What business are Rangers targeting in January?

With a week to go until the winter window shuts, Rangers are getting their affairs in order before trying to get their top signings.

Rangers have reportedly taken a fancy to Sheffield Wednesday’s Yan Valery, as the Championship side prepare for an almost certain relegation to League One following their points deductions.

Tromso midfielder Jens Hjerto-Dahl is said to be on Rangers’ radar, while Rohl may use his relationship with a certain La Liga figure to get another deal over the line.

Rohl has a good relationship with Barcelona boss Hansi Flick after they worked together at Bayern Munich. Therefore, Rangers may move for Barcelona winger Dani Rodriguez.

Either way, an intriguing last week of the window is in store for Rangers fans as they try to win their first league title since 2021.
