Hull’s owner speaks out about Kieran Dowell move from Rangers, hints at terms for deal

Kieran Dowell’s Rangers career is finally coming to an end.

Dowell has been linked with Hull City for several weeks, and the Championship outfit were relentless in their pursuit of the 28-year-old.

Having joined Rangers in July 2023, the English midfielder has been on the periphery of first-team action throughout his time in Govan.

Dowell spent the second half of last season on loan at Birmingham City and helped them earn promotion to the Championship.

Danny Rohl never viewed Dowell as part of his plans, and he is currently undergoing his medical at Hull.

Kieran Dowell set for permanent transfer to Hull City

Dowell scored in Rangers’ 5-0 win over Annan Athletic on 16 January, but with just seven appearances all season, it was clear that he never had a long-term future at Ibrox.

The attacking midfielder impressed in spells during 2023-24, but a poor start to last season under Philippe Clement led to him being shipped out on loan.

After excelling in League One for Birmingham, he has the quality to perform for Hull in the Championship as they look to earn promotion to the Premier League against all the odds.

One Hull fan took to X to claim that Dowell was among three players who were set to join on loan.

However, owner Acun Ilicali dismissed that notion, saying that two of the deals were permanent transfers.

He said: “One loan, two permanent, we did our magic.”

With Man United midfielder Toby Collyer being the one to move on loan, it’s clearly inferred that Dowell and defender Paddy McNair will be joining permanently.

It’s unclear how much Rangers could earn from his sale, but Rohl will be happy to trim down the size of his squad for good.

Which other Rangers players could be set to leave before 2 February?

With the winter transfer window closing on 2 February, Rangers still have a lot of business to conduct.

Danilo could also leave Rangers as Rohl looks to improve on his options up front.

The Brazilian scored in back-to-back games in October, but has now failed to start a match since mid-December.

Joe Rothwell is also edging closer to leaving the Bears after Sheffield United made an approach to sign him.

With just 19 appearances this season, the man signed by Russell Martin could be on his way out less than six months after moving in the summer.

It’s crucial that Rangers see all three of these players leave to improve the quality of their squad.
