Rangers transfer priority clear after strange James Tavernier whereabouts
Derek Ferguson reckons Rangers’ next transfer priority has become quite clear over the past few games.
Rangers beat Aberdeen 2-0 at the weekend to stay within three points of Scottish Premiership leaders Hearts.
Tochi Chukwuani last week became Rangers’ first winter signing, while Andreas Skov Olsen and Tuur Rommens are also set to join.
Chukwuani is a midfielder, Skov Olsen a winger and Rommens a left-back, but Ferguson believes another addition in the middle of the park is required.
Danny Rohl light of Rangers options in central midfield
James Tavernier scored yet another penalty in Rangers’ win over Aberdeen and has been used in 22 league matches this season.
As pointed out by former Rangers player Ferguson in an exclusive chat with Ibrox News, Danny Rohl has at times moved Tavernier into a central midfield role this term.
That may highlight Tavernier’s versatility, but the strange whereabouts of the defender further forward is from ideal for a team with Rangers’ aspirations.
“Rohl’s ended up with Tavernier in the middle of the park of late when making changes, which says a lot,” Ferguson said when asked about Rangers’ transfer priorities.
“Heading into this month, we needed a left-sided defender or two – one for left-back and one for left centre-back.
“Jayden Meghoma has done well but we can’t rely too much on a 19-year-old, so that definitely needed looking at and has been.

“The strength in depth isn’t there in central midfield so it needs sorting.”
Rangers deals ticking along nicely, but what about outgoings?
It is important Rangers don’t just stack their squad this month – outgoing business will be just as important.
Chukwuani is through the door, while Rommens and Skov Olsen will soon arrive. If Ferguson gets his way, that will not be all.
Certain players just seem destined to move on, such as Joe Rothwell and Kieran Dowell, both of whom have no futures at Ibrox.

Others certainly do have a part to play at Ibrox, albeit not in the short term. Findlay Curtis looks set to join Kilmarnock on loan, for example, which is a move that benefits all three parties involved.
This was always going to be a huge window for Rangers in terms of both incoming and outgoing activity, and things are slowly but surely taking shape.
