Aberdeen vs Rangers ‘unforgivable’ moment amazes BBC commentator

Rangers beat Aberdeen 2-0 at Pittodrie on Sunday and moved back to within three points of league leaders Hearts at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Thelo Aasgaard opened the scoring with a fine finish from Jayden Meghoma’s cross in the 23rd minute.

Emmanuel Fernandez then had a controversial goal disallowed, before Rangers continued to assert their dominance in the second half.

Djeidi Gassama won a penalty after being clipped by Graeme Shinnie in the 72nd minute, and James Tavernier converted from the spot to put the match beyond doubt for Danny Rohl’s side.

Rangers have now beaten Aberdeen twice in five days, and BBC commentator Liam McLeod couldn’t believe how the hosts defended during the match.

Liam McLeod rages at Aberdeen’s defence for Emmanuel Fernandez’s disallowed goal

With Rangers already 1-0 up, Tavernier launched a free-kick forward, and Fernandez beat goalkeeper Mitov in the air to head home into an empty net.

However, the 24-year-old was adjudged to have fouled the Aberdeen man by using his right elbow to knock him off balance, and referee David Dickinson disallowed the goal with the help of VAR.

The decision itself was controversial, and, luckily for the Bears, it didn’t mean much in the grand scheme of the match.

McLeod couldn’t believe how poor Aberdeen’s defending was, and felt it was far too easy for Fernandez to be unmarked in the centre of the box.

He said: “It’s another set-play, but this looks unforgivable because it’s come from inside the Rangers half.

“A long ball forward, Mitov in no man’s land, and Fernandez loops the ball over the goalkeeper into the back of the net.”

Scottish referees have been under intense pressure this season, and as Dickinson didn’t cover himself in glory, Mitov certainly got away with a horrific mistake.

Rangers now perfectly set to challenge for Scottish Premiership title

As for how Rangers played, this was a thoroughly impressive display from a team that is going from strength to strength.

Jack Butland was faultless yet again, while Mohamed Diomande put in his best performance of the season alongside Nico Raskin.

Rangers are the most confident team in Scotland at the moment – even more so than Hearts – and Rohl is certainly building a formidable outfit.

The Bears were dominant from the first minute, and to register two clean sheets in less than a week is no mean feat.

Rohl has already secured his first signing in Tochi Chukwuani, while Tuur Rommens had his medical earlier on Sunday.

With more additions to be expected, Rangers must be feared by Hearts and Celtic at the top of the table as the German head coach aims to achieve the unthinkable dream of winning the title in his first season.
