Rangers close to signing ‘unbelievable’ Premier League player who ‘doesn’t get enough credit’

Rangers are said to be closing in on another winter arrival.

Celtic’s fall-off has opened the door for Rangers to win their first Scottish Premiership title since 2021 under Danny Rohl.

However, their ability to achieve that will largely be determined by the business they can do in January, with several deals close to completion.

Tochi Chukwuani and Tuur Rommens are expected to formalise their moves to Ibrox, and they could be joined by a Premier League star.

Rangers edge closer to Sunderland transfer

Rangers have been linked with Dan Neil and Romaine Mundle, both of whom have rarely featured for Sunderland since their promotion back to the Premier League.

The latter has spent a long time on the sidelines, whereas the former has been cast aside by the likes of Granit Xhaka and Noah Sadiki, who have impressed for the Black Cats.

However, a report from the Scottish Sun now claims that Rangers are closing in on a deal to sign Neil, who is out of contract at the Stadium of Light in the summer.

The 24-year-old captained his boyhood club to promotion last season, but talks over a new contract stalled, presumably due to his lack of gametime.

Danny Rohl will be well aware of the quality possessed by Neil, having come up against him on several occasions in the Championship when he was Sheffield Wednesday boss, and that is when the midfielder earned the reputation he has today.

Ex-Sunderland coach Mike Dodds was a huge fan of Dan Neil

Mike Dodds was sacked as Wycombe manager in 2025, having left his role as coach at Sunderland to pursue a career for himself.

However, throughout his time on Wearside, Dodds built up plenty of relationships with the players, and Neil was high on that list.

Dodds oversaw his transition from academy football into the first team and had nothing but good things to say about the Sunderland midfielder.

Back in 2024, when Dodds was appointed interim manager, he said: “Tactically, Dan Neil is unbelievable – he’s my voice on the pitch.

“He doesn’t get enough credit for that – I’ve got nothing but praise for him.”

Given his age and profile, it would be a shrewd piece of business for Rangers, and one that is unlikely to set them back financially, given the length of time remaining on his contract.
