Berkay Yilmaz decides on Rangers transfer as defender ready for next step

Berkay Yilmaz has made a decision on his future following rumours of a potential move to Rangers in the January transfer window.

Danny Rohl will be hoping for several signings this month to give the Gers the best possible chance of winning the Scottish Premiership title.

Rangers beat Aberdeen 2-0 on Tuesday evening, a result that leaves them just three points behind league leaders Hearts, albeit having played a game more.

Goals from Emmanuel Fernandez and Nicolas Raskin secured the win for Rohl’s side at Ibrox, and attention has now turned back to their business in the transfer market.

Berkay Yilmaz ends Rangers speculation

Berkay Yilmaz is currently on loan at Nurnberg from SC Freiburg, but there was a chance he could make a permanent move elsewhere in the January window.

Rangers were interested in Yilmaz, who would’ve cost in the region of £4.3million, plus a £260,000 termination fee to end his loan stay at Nurnberg in the 2. Bundesliga.

However, speaking to BILD, the full-back confirmed that he will not be joining the Gers this month, or any other club for that matter.

Yilmaz will instead remain on loan at Nurnberg, and then aims to eventually play in the Bundesliga, whether that be with Freiburg or another side.

He said: “Of course it’s nice to hear about such interest. That shows that I’m performing. But it wasn’t an option for me to leave Nurnberg in the winter.

“I’m ready for the next step. My goal is to play first-class next season. I have the qualities to be a regular player in the Bundesliga.”

Rangers set to finalise double signing

Despite losing out on the chance to add Yilmaz to his ranks, Rohl is expected to get two other players through the door in the coming days.

Tochi Chukwuani is on the verge of joining Rangers from Austrian side Sturm Graz, for a reported fee of around £4m.

The defensive midfielder was left out of the squad for Sturm Graz’s friendly against Club Brugge on Thursday, hinting that a move is imminent.

Chukwuani could be announced alongside Belgian defender Tuur Rommens, who is expected to sign from Jupiler Pro League outfit Westerlo.

Rangers will pay an initial £2.6m for Rommens, with a potential £430,000 in future add-ons due to performance-related clauses.
