Rangers escalate Tuur Rommens pursuit as Philippe Clement sidekick desperate

Rangers have made their approach for Belgian left-back Tuur Rommens.

Rommens is one of the options that Rangers have looked at for the position, with former Hearts star James Penrice being the other.

Rommens has made 15 appearances for Westerlo this season, but he could be lining up in Glasgow very soon.

A report from the Daily Record on 7 January claims that the Gers have made a £3million bid for the 22-year-old.

Former Rangers coach to have final say on Tuur Rommens bid

Ex-Rangers assistant manager Issame Charai is desperate to keep Rommens, who had been an ever-present until suffering an injury in October, according to the report.

Charai, who worked under Philippe Clement, regards the Belgian Under-21 international as a key part of his side, but the bid is set to be considered.

The Gers are understood to be pushing hard for the defender, after their bid for Penrice was rejected by AEK Athens.

Why do Rangers want Rommens?

Danny Rohl is keen to bolster his options, with Jayden Meghoma, who is on loan from Brentford, the only natural left-back that the Gers have at the moment.

For starters, Meghoma needs competition, as he is currently pretty much guaranteed a starting spot in Rohl’s line-up.

Secondly, he will return to Brentford at the end of his loan spell, so the Ibrox side needs a new option on the left side of defence.

If the Light Blues are to win the Scottish Premiership, they need reinforcements in the winter transfer window, and Rommens would be a good start.

Despite his young age, he has 81 appearances at the senior level, two with Genk and 79 with his current club.

We have seen Nicolas Raskin become a fully-fledged Belgium international with the Govan outfit, and Rommens will be confident that he can do the same.

If he does, he will surely be worth the investment and can be a vital asset for Rohl’s team in their chase for the title.

However, Charai will surely prove key to any deal, as he wants to keep him around, and it remains to be seen whether the Gers can convince their former staff member to sell.
