Djeidi Gassama wanted by 19-time champions as first steps taken for Rangers deal

Djeidi Gassama is being eyed for a Rangers exit, just months after signing for the Ibrox club.

Gassama has notched six goals and three assists since he moved to the Gers in the summer, in a £2.2million deal.

Barry Ferguson has called for more from the Rangers star, but he may not have a chance to show it, as interest in his services increases.

Gassama has been linked with a switch to Villarreal, but a new contender for his signature has emerged.

New club in the mix for Djeidi Gassama move

Gassama has been up and down for Rangers, but he is still a key player for Danny Rohl in his rebuild in Govan.

A report from TEAMtalk on 7 January claims that Club Brugge, 19-time Belgian champions, have made the first steps over a move, with a preliminary enquiry, but no direct talks between the clubs.

However, it states that the winger is under contract with the Light Blues until 2029, so the Scottish club have a good position in any potential negotiations.

Why Rangers cannot afford to lose Gassama

While Gassama has scored just once in the Scottish Premiership, with the majority of his goals coming in Champions League qualifying, he could still be a vital asset in the second half of the campaign.

His pace, directness and willingness to play on either wing is a bonus for Rohl’s side, and he could come up trumps in the title race.

The Bears cannot afford to lose a player of his quality, especially in the midst of a battle for the championship, which they are currently not leading.

Gassama could be a difference maker down the stretch, and allowing him to leave in the middle of the campaign makes little sense.

A summer deal makes much more sense, and that could be why no official talks have taken place between the sides, as the Gers could have made it clear that they are not willing to sell right now, but will entertain talks in the future.

It remains to be seen whether Gassama remains in Govan in the long-term, but the increasing speculation suggests that he will not.
