Thelo Aasgaard set for final chance under Danny Rohl after what Rangers star did vs Celtic

Thelo Aasgaard’s worrying performances will soon leave Danny Rohl with no other choice but to bench him at Rangers.

Rangers beat Celtic 3-1 on Saturday, mounting a brilliant second-half comeback that was inspired by the clinical Youssef Chermiti.

The Bears have the bragging rights over their arch-rivals for the time being, and the majority of the squad turned up on what was Danny Rohl’s biggest game in charge so far.

However, Aasgaard was underwhelming in all aspects, and the £3.5million spent to sign him continues to look questionable.

Rangers face Aberdeen at Ibrox on Tuesday, and while Aasgaard is expected to start, he’ll be looking over his shoulder after Mohamed Diomande turned the Old Firm around.

Mohamed Diomande’s performance vs Celtic will worry Thelo Aasgaard

Aasgaard’s first Rangers goal came against Dundee United on 18 October, where he curled a sublime finish past goalkeeper Yevhenii Kucherenko.

He has also recorded three goal contributions in his last four games, but, once again, concerns have emerged over his ability to play this midfield role.

Rohl has afforded him plenty of opportunities, and he started in the centre of the park against Celtic.

Aasgaard was substituted at half-time for Diomande, who added stability to the midfield and was a key reason why Rangers mounted the impressive comeback.

Aasgaard will likely start versus Aberdeen, but as a result of Diomande’s impact on the pitch at Celtic Park, the Norwegian star may move across to the left.

Ultimately, the 23-year-old has thrived playing in midfield for the majority of his career, impressing at both Wigan and Luton in the EFL before making the move to Govan.

However, he hasn’t shown enough promise to justify starting every week, and even though Diomande has flaws of his own, he certainly provides better balance to the team.

Due to his goal contributions from the left, Aasgaard hasn’t been a disastrous signing at Ibrox, but he certainly needs to up his performance levels if he wants to start as the number 10.

Jens Hjerto-Dahl signing adds further concern for Aasgaard

Jens Hjerto-Dahl has emerged as a transfer target at Ibrox, with reports suggesting he could potentially cost around £6million in January.

Playing for Norwegian side Tromso, Hjerto-Dahl would likely come into defensive midfield to play alongside Connor Barron.

His arrival would allow for Nicolas Raskin to play further forward, which is the area Aasgaard currently operates in.

If there wasn’t already enough motivation for Aasgaard to start performing, the potential business Rangers may complete in January will certainly leave him worried.

If he wants to play in his preferred central role for the remainder of the season, Tuesday’s clash with Aberdeen is exactly when he needs to start proving himself.
