Billy Dodds can’t believe ‘woeful’ Rangers scenes vs Aberdeen
Rangers went into the break 2-0 up against Aberdeen, but it was not all plain sailing despite the scoreline.
Rangers continued the momentum from the win over Celtic last time out, and took an early lead at Ibrox on 6 January.
Emmanuel Fernandez powered home a header to send the home crowd into raptures and continue the momentum from the Old Firm victory, and Nicolas Raskin notched a second in the 42nd minute.
However, Danny Rohl will have been nervous after a shaky moment for his team against the Dons while they held their narrow lead, before the Belgian’s goal.
Rangers icon Dodds blown away by dismal Rangers moment
Dodds regularly shares his opinions on Rangers’ matches, and this time was no different as he did not hold back.
The Gers were opened up in the 16th minute when Kenan Bilalovic ran onto a long pass, ahead of the whole defence, but he fluffed his lines.
Speaking on BBC Sportsound (20:17 pm), Dodds said: “What an opportunity that is from a straight ball down the middle.
“Woeful Rangers defending, but it’s as poor a touch as you’ll ever see.”
Why Rangers need to stay solid at the back
The Gers need to keep their clean sheet, as they need to move three points behind Hearts, who play on Wednesday.
Rohl’s side need to put the pressure on Derek McInnes’ charges whenever they can, and show that they are contenders for the Scottish Premiership title, rather than pretenders for the throne.
- Rangers had 65 per cent possession, with Aberdeen recording just 35 per cent
- The hosts had ten shots, compared to two for the visitors
- They had four shots on target, with the Dons having one
Jack Butland was forced into action several times against the Hoops, and it could have been game over before the second-half turnaround, if the English stopper was not on form.
The Light Blues cannot afford to allow the managerless Pittodrie side to take anything from the contest, and it would be a statement if they can stop them from scoring at all.
It is going well so far, but they cannot afford to give the visitors any moments like the Bilalovic chance that they allowed in the first 45 minutes.
The Dons may not miss next time, and anything other than a win is not good enough, if Rohl’s side want to lift the trophy in May.
