Rangers vs Aberdeen postponement latest as Met Office issue amber warning in Scotland

Rangers’ clash with Aberdeen on Tuesday evening will be played amid freezing temperatures in Scotland.

Rangers beat Celtic 3-1 at the weekend and will now be eager to build some momentum in the hope of chasing down leaders Hearts.

As memorable as the victory on enemy territory was on Saturday, Rangers and Danny Rohl cannot get too carried away.

Aberdeen, who sacked manager Jimmy Thelin on Sunday, are next up at Ibrox in the first of a quickfire double-header between the sides.

Glasgow set to miss worst of bad weather

Despite weather warnings being in place across large parts of the United Kingdom over the weekend, the Old Firm was played in sunny conditions.

Those weather warnings remain in place, with the Met Office putting an amber alert in place for parts of Scotland on Monday.

Moving into Tuesday, however, that will be downgraded to yellow – meaning snow and ice that will bring disruption – but Glasgow will not be directly impacted.

It means fans travelling to Ibrox from slightly further afield will have to take care, including those from Aberdeen – and indeed the players – but the game itself with Aberdeen is not under any risk of postponement unless the weather conditions deteriorate.

That is good news for Rohl, as he will be eager to simply get his players back on the field in order to build the feel-good factor after the victory over Celtic.

Rangers’ remarkable Ibrox record to begin calendar years

Rangers will understandably be the heavy favourites to beat Aberdeen, who are on the lookout for a new manager.

The Gers are six points behind leaders Hearts, while Aberdeen are 13 points worse off in eighth place.

Rohl will be keen to add more players to his Rangers squad, but the immediate focus is on not slipping up against Aberdeen in midweek.

And Rangers’ record in their opening home match of a calendar year is pretty special, having lost only once in the past 40 years – a 2-0 loss to Celtic in 2011.

The Gers have won on each of the past five occasions in which Aberdeen have been their opening opponents at Ibrox to begin a new year, each without conceding.

Should Rangers extend that run this week, as expected, then the Scottish Premiership title race will still be very much alive.
