Jim Gillespie set for Rangers switch as Ibrox approach now on cards for guru appointment
Rangers’ long-term pursuit of Jim Gillespie could finally yield its rewards.
Rangers are in the process of reshaping their technical team after CEO Patrick Stewart and sporting director Kevin Thelwell were sacked in November.
Lee McCulloch is already expected to be appointed for a director of football role at Ibrox, as plans take shape behind the scenes to support head coach Danny Rohl.
Rangers have previously attempted to lure Gillespie from his current role at St Mirren, but he has previously turned down a move to Ibrox.
Now, though, it looks as though the Glasgow giants are at last about to persuade him to take on a new challenge in Govan.
Rangers to land Jim Gillespie as motivation emerges
Gillespie was said to have turned down the move to Ibrox previously over fears he would be made a scapegoat if things did not go well on the pitch.
Now, though, the Gers-supporting Gillespie is reportedly ready to accept the role of chief executive at Rangers, journalist Alan Nixon has reported on his patreon.
Nixon states that the motivation behind Gillespie’s seeming change of heart is down to the chance to “relaunch Rangers off the pitch and to have top power at Ibrox”.
Gillespie is expected to accept the role, according to Nixon, as Rangers put plans in place to rebuild the technical team following the upheaval late in 2025.
What did Danny Rohl say about Kevin Thewell’s exit at Rangers?
It has been a funny old season for Rangers, but things on the pitch are generally trending upwards thanks to some excellent work from Danny Rohl since he replaced the deeply unpopular Russell Martin.
Indeed, Rangers’ 3-1 win over Celtic in the Old Firm derby on Saturday left the club level on points with the Bhoys and six points adrift of leaders Hearts with half the season still to play.
Rohl has often talked of the need to get the structure right off the pitch at Ibrox and he will be keeping a close eye on appointments in the technical department.
- Stewart and Thelwell were sacked in November
- The duo were heavily criticised for poor summer recruitment and the appointment of Martin
- McCulloch has been heavily tipped to join the technical team, with Gillespie now also on the radar
It was something he spoke about at the time of Thelwell and Stewart‘s exits at Ibrox, and making sure a talented coach like Rohl gets the right support is of paramount importance.
“I had a good relationship with Kevin, we were always in a daily business, we spoke to each other with Patrick as well. They were also involved in the process when I arrived here. But then I got a call from Andrew, who gave me this message,” Rohl said at the time.
“It’s important to know that I’m close to Andrew (Cavenagh), we are in contact every day, we speak to each other. But there are also good people around who support me, I think this is crucial. I cannot do this alone or can’t make decisions alone. I think it’s important to understand that we have a good structure in the club.”
