Issame Charai to block Rangers transfer as new bid update emerges

Rangers may face disappointment from a familiar face in Issame Charai in the winter transfer window.

The Belgian coach was the Gers’ assistant manager under Phillipe Clement and remained in that role until June 2025.

After a disastrous start under Russell Martin, Danny Rohl has turned things around after beating Celtic at Parkhead on 3 January, and have now gone level on points with their Old Firm rivals in the William Hill Premiership.

With the Light Blues expected to strengthen in January, Westerlo left-back Tuur Rommens has emerged as a target at Ibrox, but a deal for him may prove to be difficult.

Westerlo yet to receive bids for Rangers target Tuur Rommens

Charai, who’s currently the Westerlo head coach, has revealed that no official bid has yet been made for Rommens.

While the Belgium Under-21 international is on the radar at Ibrox, it doesn’t look like the Gers have taken any concrete steps to sign him yet.

With the Glaswegian outfit’s former assistant manager admitting that the Jupiler Pro League club are short on options at left-back, the 22-year-old’s future seems set at Het Kuipje.

Speaking to the media, Charai said, “There has been no official bid for Tuur Rommens. And our situation at left back has been well documented. We need reinforcements in that position.”

Rohl is also tracking AEK Athens left-back James Penrice, and it remains to be seen who the Light Blues end up signing to bolster their defence.

Jayden Meghoma arguably needs more competition in the squad, and the German manager should start planning for the future already, as the Brentford loanee’s time in G51 will end next summer.

Danny Rohl makes mistake with recent transfer admission

An approach for Rommens seems guaranteed at Ibrox, with Rohl admitting he wants more options on the left side of defence.

However, while the former Sheffield Wednesday boss recognises the need for a new left-back, he is arguably making a mistake by trusting James Tavernier and Max Aarons at Rangers.

Tavernier and Aarons have been inconsistent this season, while Dujon Sterling’s fitness issues are well-documented at the Light Blues.

A new right-back should also be on the Gers’ agenda, but it remains to be seen how much money will be spent in the coming weeks.
