Sheffield United make approach to sign Joe Rothwell as new Rangers exit update emerges
Joe Rothwell is edging closer to an exit from Rangers after Sheffield United made an approach to sign him.
Rangers only signed Rothwell from Bournemouth in July when Russell Martin was in charge, but like most of the players acquired in the summer, he’s failed to hit the ground running at Ibrox.
The 30-year-old hasn’t featured for the Light Blues in the league since October 18 and has been left out of the last seven matchday squads.
Danny Rohl has preferred multiple other options to the Englishman, and it has even been said that Rangers are willing to let Rothwell leave in January, something that is now accelerating.

Sheffield United want Joe Rothwell on loan
According to journalist Darren Witcoop, Sheffield United have asked about loaning Rothwell from Ibrox, while other Championship clubs have shown an interest.

United previously placed Rothwell on their radar in December, and now appears to be edging closer to securing his signature.
The central midfielder is familiar with the second tier, having featured for the likes of Leeds United, Blackburn Rovers, Southampton, and Bournemouth at the level.
That is why an opportunity to return to the Championship and work under someone like Chris Wilder could appeal to Rothwell, who has also been tipped to join Derby County on a permanent deal.

Rothwell hasn’t lived up to Russell Martin’s praise
When Rangers captured the Manchester-born midfielder from Bournemouth, he arrived with praise from Martin under his belt.
The Scotsman previously managed Rothwell at Southampton, where he helped them win promotion to the Premier League in 2024.
In March 2024, it was two strikes from the bench from Rothwell that saw the Saints come back from behind to beat Sunderland 4-2, and Martin waxed lyrical about his impact.
“Joe is an amazing finisher,” the former Rangers boss said via BEIN Sports at the time. “The first one looks easy but it isn’t, it is in the half volley, and then with the second he’s showed great composure.
“He was really great when he came on. Him and Joe Aribo can be frustrated that they aren’t starting but they have two guys in front of them who have been playing really well.”
Rothwell sadly hasn’t reached the heights he promised at Ibrox, and after just 19 appearances for the club and two assists, could already be heading for the exit door.
