Rangers learn Elliot Watt transfer fate as Motherwell figure speaks out
Rangers may be left disappointed in their pursuit of Motherwell star Elliot Watt.
Rangers are reportedly eyeing a move for Watt, as Danny Rohl begins to revolutionise his squad at Ibrox.
Rohl is said to be a massive fan of the potentially World Cup-bound ace, as he looks for a number six to bring more security to his midfield.
However, whether the Gers could bring Watt in, may be affected by what a senior figure within the Well’s setup has said.
Would Motherwell sell Elliot Watt to Rangers?
Rangers may face a difficult task to bring Watt to Govan despite his apparent allegiances to the club, as the Well’s stance on a potential transfer has emerged.
Motherwell assistant manager Max Rogers has admitted that the Fir Park side want to keep hold of the 25-year-old in the winter transfer window.
In quotes reported by Daily Record, he said: “He’s an important player for us and helps set the tone, helps set the culture, and obviously we don’t want to see anyone leaving.”
Why Rangers will surely struggle to sign Watt now
The Steelmen clearly want to keep the three-cap Scotland Under-21 international, which will make it hard for the Gers to strike a deal.
Obviously, money talks, but the 49ers Enterprises and Andrew Cavenagh, will surely be keen not to be ripped off, as they were in the summer, especially with the £8.5million spent on Youssef Chermiti.
Securing players who already have experience in the Scottish game, especially ones who are having as good a season as Watt is clever, and the Gers need to do it more often, but not if the price is too high.
- Watt has made 19 appearances in the Scottish Premiership so far this season
- He has notched three goals and two assists from the holding midfield position
- Watt has won 51.4 per cent of his ground duels in this campaign
They may decide to turn their focus elsewhere, and pursue a deal for Tromso’s Jens Hjerto-Dahl or Pau midfielder Daylam Meddah as alternatives to the Scottish player.
It remains to be seen which direction the Light Blues go in, but the Well seem insistent on keeping one of their star players around, which makes a deal difficult to achieve.
