Josh Windass faces harsh Ibrox reality if recent Rangers developments come true in January

Wrexham’s Josh Windass has been unexpectedly linked with a return to Rangers in January.

Danny Rohl wants new additions through the door this month with Rangers now in a healthy position to challenge for the Scottish Premiership title.

The Bears have been slowly chipping away with results in the league, as the Gers boss seems to have completely lifted the mood in Glasgow since his arrival.

Rangers have been tipped with a move for Windass this window, and although Wrexham aren’t keen on selling their star, the Bears could throw an appealing figure at the Championship side.

However, if the former Rangers man does indeed come back to Ibrox in January, he will almost certainly have to hit the ground running for a few reasons.

Josh Windass is not in good books of Rangers fans

Rangers supporters have already voiced their opinions online over the potential signing of Windass, with many of the opinion that they don’t want the forward back.

Windass’ father has reacted to the rumours of a Rangers return, and his cryptic message suggested that his son may also have mixed thoughts on donning Blue and White again.

The attacker had previously apologised for shushing the Rangers faithful back when scoring against Partick Thistle in a 2-0 win.

Windass said, as quoted by Sky Sports in 2018: “I was a bit frustrated. I’ve just reacted in maybe the wrong way, but it’s what happens sometimes in football. You just go for emotion.”

While some believe that the 31-year-old would add good depth to Rohl’s side and could be another useful attacking option, others haven’t forgotten the past.

There were previous concerns over Windass’ work ethic, as a consensus formed over the idea that he often went missing in games.

The journey for Windass to win over the support of the Rangers fanbase could be challenging, should a deal be concluded in the weeks to come.

In-depth look at Windass’ current performance levels

The fact that Windass is nearing the end of his playing career will only add to the uncertainty over a potential January move, given the overall feeling of the versatile forward’s first stint with Rangers.

However, it seems like the former Sheffield Wednesday man has only improved since he left Glasgow.

Windass is already in double figures for goal contributions with Wrexham in the Championship this season, having only started on 15 occasions.

An average of 7.7 goals per season seems to be better than anything that current Rangers forwards offer.

Context is needed, though, as some of the nine seasons have seen Windass play as little as nine, 12, and 16 matches.

This only adds to the fact that he hasn’t always featured as a striker either and has regularly provided assists.

Regardless, Windass still has a point to prove to fans if the links to Rangers become a reality in January.
