Lawrence Shankland to Rangers transfer chances rated as riots mooted

Rangers’ chances of signing Lawrence Shankland in January have been completely dismissed.

Shankland was linked with a move to Rangers in the summer, but nothing materialised, and he ended up staying at Hearts.

The 30-year-old is now firing the Jambos towards the title while the Gers struggle with Bojan Miovski, Youssef Chermiti and Danilo leading their line.

Rangers could revisit a move for Shankland when the winter transfer market opens, but there are doubts about whether they would succeed.

Could Rangers sign Shankland in the January window?

Danny Rohl‘s side need a striker, as they simply do not score enough goals, and a move for Shankland makes perfect sense.

The Scotland striker has nine goals and two assists in 17 Scottish Premiership matches so far this season, while the Gers’ top league scorer is right-back James Tavernier with four.

However, they may have missed the boat, as Scottish Sun journalist Roger Hannah believes that it would be basically impossible to convince the league leaders to sell now.

Writing on 30 December, he said: “If Hearts tried to sell Lawrence Shankland to Rangers during this window there would be riots on the streets of Gorgie.

“Rangers had their chance in the summer, they could have got them for nothing, they snubbed it.

Shankland made the Gers pay when the sides met recently.

“They made a gross error of judgment in the summer, both with Shankland and with Josh Mulligan, and they’re probably living to regret it.”

Why Kevin Thelwell is to blame for Rangers transfer failure

Kevin Thelwell was dismissed from his post as sporting director in November after just a few months in the role, after a disastrous spell in Govan.

Thelwell is a huge reason why the Gers are in the predicament that they are, miles behind the pace in the league, as he sanctioned several moves that were not up to par.

The main one was the deal for Chermiti, who had failed to score a single goal for Everton, but that did not dissuade Thelwell from spending £8.5million on him.

He could have brought Shankland, a proven goalscorer in the Scottish top-flight, in for free, but he chose to sign Miovski and the Toffees flop instead.

That move has gone exactly the way that many predicted it would have, with Thelwell out of a job and Light Blues supporters regretting the fact that they never signed the 30-year-old.

Hannah is probably right, it is surely too late for the Govan outfit to sign the 18-cap international, and the chance has passed.
