Kevin Thelwell got one thing right at Rangers as miracle resurgence continues

Kevin Thelwell had many transfer failures during his short time at Rangers, and Danny Rohl has been on a mission to revive careers at Ibrox.

Andrew Cavenagh decided to part ways with Thelwell and Patrick Stewart in November after the pair continued to let people down at Ibrox.

Thelwell was in charge of transfers for the Bears, and after Rangers spent over £20million in the summer, they have very little to show for it.

The poor recruitment also saw Russell Martin’s time at Rangers end quickly, which left Rohl with a mammoth task to fire the Bears back up the Scottish Premiership upon his arrival.

However, as bad as Thelwell’s acquisitions were, one man in particular has finally started to show signs of promise in Glasgow.

Emmanuel Fernandez is Rangers’ very own Sergio Ramos

Rangers beat St. Mirren 2-1 on Tuesday to close the gap to just six points between themselves and Hearts in first.

Emmanuel Fernandez was on the scoresheet in the match – and not for the first time this season.

Thelwell brought the centre-back to Rangers from Peterborough United in the summer and has taken his goal tally up to four this campaign, despite only having played 13 times in all competitions.

As highlighted by Sofascore, the 24-year-old has completed 86.6 per cent of his aerial duels in his last five league games, and was at it once more versus St. Mirren.

Fernandez is also performing with other defensive actions, such as making 9.20 clearances per game and 1.20 interceptions every 90 minutes.

Not only is he proving his capability as a solid defender, but he is also showing shades of Sergio Ramos with his goal-scoring threat.

The exciting part is, things are only going to get better for Fernandez and Rangers’ defence.

Youssef Chermiti had his best game vs St. Mirren; stats show it

Fernandez was criticised early on in his Rangers career, but he hasn’t been the only summer signing that’s taken time to settle in.

Youssef Chermiti has been bashed more than any other Gers player since coming to Ibrox in a £8million deal from Everton.

The striker was clearly one of Thelwell’s favourites, as the latter also signed him during his spell at Everton.

Although he didn’t score, Chermiti had his best all-around game for Rangers yet, showcasing real ability with the ball at his feet. He would drop deep and often find a man, displaying a great passing ability.

Who knows? If these two can keep their good performances up, maybe Thelwell is owed an apology after all.
