Thelo Aasgaard magnificent, sloppy teammate a worry – Rangers player ratings vs St Mirren

Rangers beat St Mirren 2-1 in the William Hill Premiership on Tuesday.

Stephen Robinson’s team travelled to Ibrox on 30 December, with the Gers going into the break with a one-goal advantage.

Nicolas Raskin missed a sitter against St Mirren, but Thelo Aasgaard made no mistake with his header towards the end of the first half.

Emmanuel Fernandez then doubled the lead in the 52nd minute, but his handball led to a penalty for the visitors, who eventually scored in the 82nd minute through Mikael Mandron after Jack Butland saved the spot kick.

Thelo Aasgaard pounces for Rangers vs St Mirren

Aasgaard found the back of the net against Motherwell and scored in his second consecutive game.

The Norway international has faced heavy criticism from the Ibrox faithful for his lack of impact since moving from down south, but he’s slowly starting to turn things around.

With the 23-year-old bringing control to the midfield, the Light Blues were able to stifle St Mirren in moments of transition, with his substitution in the 69th minute bringing the visitors back in the game.

Rohl was rewarded for playing a much more attacking side against the Saints, and fans in G51 will hope Aasgaard and the rest can take this form into the new year.

Special mention must be given to Djeidi Gassama and Butland, with the goalkeeper undoubtedly earning his keep with the penalty save.

John Souttar has volatile return at Ibrox

Souttar was sidelined for a few weeks at Rangers, but played the final minutes of the 1-0 victory against the Steelmen.

Rohl opted to start the Scotland international in the final game of the year at Ibrox, and it feels like his return may have been rushed, with the centre-back looking sloppy on the ball and with his passes.

There was a moment early in the second half where the 29-year-old let St Mirren create an opportunity after being beaten and going to the ground.

Souttar looked slow and lethargic, which may be down to his lack of sharpness, but the German manager arguably didn’t have a choice, with Dujon Sterling not even making the bench.
