Ex-Premier League official amazed by John Beaton’s reaction to Rangers controversy vs St Mirren

St Mirren were rightly awarded a penalty as Rangers won 2-1 in the William Hill Premiership on Tuesday.

Danny Rohl got the better of Stephen Robinson on 30 December, with Thelo Aasgaard and Emmanuel Fernandez scoring for the Gers.

With the Light Blues comfortably winning the game, the former Peterborough United centre-back was penalised for a handball inside the box at around the 74th-minute mark.

On-field referee Ryan Lee initially didn’t think much of Fernandez’s actions, but after a VAR review, the Saints were awarded a penalty, which Jack Butland saved.

VAR right to intervene in Rangers vs St Mirren

John Beaton did the right thing by advising Lee to have a look at Fernandez’s handball.

Keith Hackett was amazed to see the VAR official intervene and correctly award St. Mirren a penalty at Ibrox.

It was clear that the centre-back’s hand was in an unnatural position as he blocked a shot from one of the Saints’ attackers.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News, the former Premier League referee said, “That’s a good intervention by VAR John Beaton. It’s handball leading to the correct award of a penalty kick. VAR does appear to operate with more clarity and consistency in Scotland.”

Nicolas Raskin missed a sitter in the first half at Ibrox, which meant Mikael Mandron’s 82nd-minute goal led to a nervy finish in G51.

Danny Rohl on course to pull off something special after developments away from Ibrox

Rohl still has hopes of winning the William Hill Premiership, and who can argue against him after what’s happened in recent weeks?

Celtic lost 2-0 to Motherwell at Fir Park on the day, with Rangers now just three points behind their Old Firm rivals.

While second place is within the Light Blues’ reach, they’ve also gotten close to Hearts, with six points now between the two teams.

With the winter transfer window on the horizon, the German manager undoubtedly has a chance to do something that seemed impossible just a few months ago due to Russell Martin’s abysmal stint in G51.
