Rangers title caveat emerges as Andrew Cavenagh has to roll the dice at Ibrox
Rangers aren’t seen as genuine contenders for the William Hill Premiership title just yet.
Danny Rohl’s team got back to winning ways against Motherwell on 27 December, with Hearts dropping points against Hibernian after their 3-2 loss at Easter Road on the day.
Derek McInnes seemed to have crushed hopes of winning the league at Ibrox after beating the Gers at Tynecastle Park on 21 December, but things may have changed once again.
The Glaswegian outfit are once again nine points behind the Jam Tarts with a game in hand, and the coming days could potentially prove massive in the race for the title.

Rangers need transfer overhaul to compete with Hearts
Around three to four first-team quality signings are needed for the Gers to genuinely be contenders in the William Hill Premiership, Keith Jackson says.
While the Daily Record journalist doesn’t feel the Light Blues have what it takes to go all the way as things stand, the winter transfer window may turn things around at Ibrox if Andrew Cavenagh is willing to make an effort.
The addition of a new number nine capable of scoring consistently could possibly be a priority for the Glaswegian outfit if they want to compete with Hearts and Celtic.
Speaking on Hotline Live on 28 December, Jackson said, “I look at Rangers, I don’t think they’re anywhere near strong enough to be considered genuine contenders. The caveat being, in January, what does Rohl do, what does Cavenagh do? Does he roll the dice here?”
The journalist added, “Rangers will only be genuinely in this race if they sign three or four guys who are starters, and that includes a striker.”
Rohl has made a new number six his priority at Ibrox, but more than one addition to the starting lineup is arguably needed to reignite hope in Govan.
Danny Rohl to pull off something special in January
Rohl has made a difference at Ibrox since replacing Russell Martin, but his predecessors’ errors surely still have an impact in G51.
The German manager was unable to take the opportunity at Tynecastle Park against Hearts, but he can pull off something special in the next four games as Rangers face St Mirren, Celtic and Aberdeen twice.
| Team | Matches played | Points |
| 1. Hearts | 19 | 41 |
| 2. Celtic | 18 | 38 |
| 3. Rangers | 18 | 32 |
A perfect record in the upcoming matches will surely see the Light Blues claw their way closer to the top of the table.
With Celtic starting to find their feet under Wilfried Nancy, Hearts will undoubtedly face pressure as they look to maintain their lead in the William Hill Premiership.
