Rangers better off spending on Kieron Bowie after £5m transfer claim at Ibrox

Rangers fans are unsurprisingly dreaming about Santos striker Alfredo Morelos returning in the winter transfer window.

Morelos’ future in Brazil is uncertain, with the Vila Belmiro club looking to offload the striker after he spent the last 18 months on loan at Colombian outfit Atletico Nacional.

Kris Boyd suggested Kieron Bowie’s signing at Ibrox in the summer, but the Gers ended up signing Youssef Chermiti and Bojan Miovski to replace Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane.

The Glaswegian outfit’s strikers are struggling to score goals now, and the number nine position remains an area of concern for Danny Rohl ahead of January.

Kieron Bowie better investment than Alfredo Morelos at Rangers

Santos are looking to get £5million for Morelos, with around a year remaining on his contract at the Estáadio Urbano Caldeira.

Journalist Jonny McFarlane believes the Gers would be better off making that investment in a young striker like Hibernian’s Bowie at Ibrox, who’s shown a lot of potential this season with seven goals in 25 appearances this season.

While the Colombia international was a key player at the Light Blues during his six-year spell in G51, the centre-forward is arguably past his best.

Speaking on The Rangers Review on 29 December, McFarlane said, “If you’ve got £5m to spend, you’d be better spending it on Bowie. A significantly younger guy. But there’s a romance about Morelos, isn’t there? He had such a poor season, his final season before he left, and that can happen to any player.”

The Ibrox hierarchy are willing to cut their losses on Chermiti, but the Glaswegian outfit will undoubtedly need to bolster their attack first.

A new number nine should already be a priority for Rohl in G51, but it remains to be seen who the German manager can get midway through the season.

Lyall Cameron and Findlay Curtis could leave Ibrox on loan in January, suggesting the Gers are making room for multiple additions to the team.

It isn’t surprising to see Rangers looking to offload a midfielder and forward, with the area certainly in need of reinforcements in the winter transfer window.

A couple of defensive additions who can improve the starting lineup may also be required if Rohl wants to compete for the William Hill Premiership title.

The coming weeks will undoubtedly have plenty of talking points at the Glaswegian outfit, with a busy window expected at Ibrox.
