Danny Rohl must go all out to sign £4.3m player for Rangers after Tuur Rommens blow

Rangers have slim hopes of winning the Scottish Premiership title, although a successful January transfer window could increase their chances.

Danny Rohl is in the market for multiple signings, and Rangers have been linked with a sensational return for Josh Windass on loan, with the 31-year-old currently playing for Championship side Wrexham.

Jens Hjerto-Dahl is also of interest to Rangers as a possible option to bolster their engine room, and the Norwegian could be a long-term replacement for Nicolas Raskin.

On top of a central midfielder and striker, the Light Blues are prioritising a left-back to challenge Jayden Meghoma, and the perfect player could have already presented himself.

Rangers should go for Berkay Yilmaz afer Tuur Rommens snub

Meghoma is the only natural left-back in the Gers squad, and to solve that problem, Rangers placed Tuur Rommens on their radar from Belgian Pro League side Westerlo.

A January transfer seemed possible for the 22-year-old until Rommens dismissed any links to Rangers, with Rohl potentially forced to look elsewhere.

Rangers were linked with Freiburg’s Berkay Yilmaz at the end of November, and he is the player they should go all out to sign after this latest update.

Yilmaz would cost the Scottish giants in the region of £4.3million, although the Bundesliga side would have to pay a £260,000 termination fee to end his loan stay at Nurnberg.

17 appearances
2 assists
7 big chances created
1.4 key passes per game
1.8 tackles per game
5 balls recovered per game

The 20-year-old has showcased his talents in Germany’s second division in 2025/26, impressing with his creativity and attacking influence down the left flank.

Yilmaz has created seven big chances and averaged 1.4 key passes in 2025/26, while also demonstrating his defensive talents with five balls recovered and 1.8 tackles per game.

The Turkish youngster could supply an extra dimension down the left for Rangers and thrive in a system that encourages the full-backs to push high.

Why signing a left back is so important for Rangers

In the January transfer window, Rangers first priority is to sign a striker, but a new left-back is high on Rohl’s list.

Meghoma is the only natural left-back in the squad, and as he’s only on loan from Brentford, a long-term solution is needed.

The 19-year-old could benefit from having someone rivalling him for a place in the starting lineup, as currently, only Max Aarons and Dujon Sterling can play there, but they’re better used on the right flank.

Indeed, capturing Yilmaz from Germany would add balance and quality to a position that is lacking while thinking long-term.
