Jack Butland branded ‘rubbish’ after raging at Rangers teammates for his own failings

Jack Butland was called out over fury with his Rangers teammates for making a mistake of his own in the win over Motherwell.

Rangers made hard work of beating Motherwell 1-0 at Ibrox on Saturday afternoon, thanks to Thelo Aasgaard‘s second-half winner.

After Rangers were beaten by Hearts last week, and with Celtic winning a chaotic match at Livingston, it was crucial the Light Blues took the points and they had Butland to thank for doing so after a series of crucial saves.

The Englishman made three key stops in the first half, and denied Callum Hendry just moments before Aasgaard, but he had an embarrassing moment of his own as well and failed to take responsibility for it.

Butland blames teammates for ‘rubbish’ clearance

In the first minute after the restart centre-back Emmanuel Fernandez passed the ball back to his keeper under no pressure.

However, Butland dallied on the ball for a couple of seconds too long and was eventually closed down, scrambling to move the ball onto his right foot before slicing a long ball straight out of play.

He then gesticulated angrily towards Fernandez and his fellow defenders, but couldn’t escape the blame for it live on BBC Radio Scotland.

Commentating live Thomas Duncan said: “He’s sliced the clearance straight into the stands and he’s having a go at his team for not giving him an option.”

Former Gers midfielder Ian McCall then responded: “I think he’s having a go at the pass-back because he’s taken it to his wrong side and he wanted it to the other side.

“But ultimately it was just a rubbish kick out.”

Rangers need help in January

A clean sheet and three points against a side that came into the game above the Light Blues in the table looks pretty good on paper.

But the action on the pitch did not inspire confidence, aside from Butland showing every bit of the shot-stopping ability that had the Rangers keeper linked to £20million moves not that long ago.

Rangers are ready to let Youssef Chermiti leave but despite a lively start he didn’t do anything to put himself in the shop window, while Jayden Meghoma let Motherwell in repeatedly down the Gers left.

Defensive help might be the priority but with the visitors chasing the game late on the home side had numerous overloads on the counter-attack and failed to find the net to make the game safe, so someone else who can score would be nice for fans.

Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers representatives were in attendance at Ibrox and Rohl will have to hope they saw up close just how much backing he needs in the January window.
