Mohamed Diomande’s Rangers career could be over after new Pierre Ekwah developments

Mohamed Diomande has struggled to gain momentum under Danny Rohl.

Diomande has been sent off twice for Rangers this season, struggled with injuries, and has been left out of the Ivory Coast’s AFCON squad due to his poor run of form.

The 24-year-old has failed to showcase his quality consistently since making the £4.5million move from FC Nordsjaelland in January 2024.

As a result of his below-par performances, Rohl is looking to reshape the whole midfield, and Joe Rothwell’s Rangers exit is also looking certain.

Rangers are interested in signing Pierre Ekwah from Saint-Etienne, and Diomande will be nervously watching as negotiations have begun for the former Sunderland man.

Rangers begin negotiations to sign Pierre Ekwah

Ekwah has refused to play for Saint-Etienne after they triggered a permanent clause in his loan deal from Sunderland, with the midfielder not wanting to move after suffering relegation to Ligue 2.

A hearing to decide the disagreement between Ekwah and Saint Etienne has now been postponed until the first quarter of 2026, but the Light Blues remain on high alert should the legal issues be solved.

As reported by Sport, Udinese, Rangers, and a third unnamed club have all initiated negotiations with the Frenchman.

Ekwah has had quite a unique journey through the English youth system before eventually making his breakthrough at Sunderland, but has not played a game of football since May.

Rangers are clearly intent on signing the former Sunderland man regardless of his ongoing dispute with his team, and Diomande would be the player who would suffer the most from the deal.

In recent weeks, Connor Barron and Nico Raskin have made up a double pivot in midfield, leaving Diomande playing further forward.

However, he has been ineffective in this role, and the arrival of Ekwah would leave Rangers with another defensive option, meaning Raskin could be deployed further forward.

It’s clear that Rohl prefers Barron’s control in the middle of the park, and Diomande has a lot of work to do if he wants to get back in favour at Ibrox.

How can Mohamed Diomande make his case to Danny Rohl?

Ekwah is a tough-tackling midfielder himself, although there is little doubt that he is much more disciplined than Diomande.

The Ivorian could have seen Red against Hearts, and has been costly in several games due to his ill-discipline and lack of concentration.

Since Barron has come in as a regular starter, he’s hardly put a foot wrong, and it remains to be seen whether Diomande will accept being a substitute.

The likelihood is that he doesn’t, and it would bring an end to his underwhelming career in Govan.
