Rangers could have perfect solution for goal-shy attack as Danny Rohl eyes ‘game-changer’

When the January transfer window opens, Rangers will be looking to erase the damage caused during the summer.

Former sporting director Kevin Thelwell was the man behind their demise as Rangers spent a whopping £10million on Youssef Chermiti, among others.

That is why Danny Rohl is in the market for a new centre-forward, seeing January as an opportunity to fix the German’s glaring problem.

Rohl thinks Rangers can still win the Scottish Premiership, despite losing 2-1 to Hearts on Sunday, and one potential signing could be crucial.

Danny Rohl on ‘game-changer’ Josh Windass

On Tuesday, it was revealed that Rangers have enquired to sign Josh Windass on loan, with the 31-year-old making a possible return to Ibrox.

Windass was signed by the Gers in 2016 for just £60,000 from Accrington Stanley, before departing the club in 2018 with 19 goals and 13 assists in 73 appearances.

The Englishman may feel he has unfinished business in Scotland, and to give Rangers every chance of launching a title charge, he could make a temporary switch.

Rohl managed Windass for almost two of his seven years at Sheffield Wednesday, and the versatile forward became somewhat of a maverick at Hillsborough.

Speaking about the attacker in 2023, Rohl hailed him as a ‘game-changer’, and said: “When we look at the whole picture, he started back training on Thursday. He missed a training session during the week but I think he can be the game-changer.

“He can create things and that is what we need to happen. That was the reason I put him on the bench and I’m very happy that he’s now ready to go.”

Windass also possesses leadership qualities

Windass left Wednesday at a similar time to Rohl this summer and chose to join Wrexham on a free transfer.

The Hull-born forward produced countless memorable moments in South Yorkshire, including the winner in the League One play-off final win over Barnsley in 2023.

Rangers fans will remember his individual qualities that are capable of turning a game on its head, but since leaving Ibrox in 2018, Windass has also developed into a leader, and that is what the Gers currently lack.

In April 2024, Rohl was complimentary of his leadership skills, hailing his fighting qualities and ability to lead by example.

“I said to him he also has to take responsibility. If you want to be a good player and a strong leader on the pitch you have to show up. It makes no sense just to talk,” the German said.

“He fought for every inch, he showed his quality.”
