Graeme Souness names four transfers Rangers need in Jack Butland reveal

Graeme Souness doesn’t think Rangers need a new goalkeeper to replace Jack Butland in the winter transfer window.

The Gers icon believes the England international is good enough to be the first-choice shot-stopper in Govan until the end of the season.

Andrew Cavenagh is expected to make a significant effort at Ibrox in January, with plans already in place to strengthen the squad.

Stig Inge Bjornebye will support Danny Rohl in planning for recruitment, and it will be interesting to see who they target at the Glaswegian outfit in the coming weeks.

Rangers need squad overhaul in January

Souness feels two new defenders, a midfielder and a striker should be pursued by the Gers.

The defensive situation at Ibrox is a bit complicated right now due to John Souttar and Derek Cornelius’ injury, and Nasser Djiga is also absent due to the Africa Cup of Nations.

In the middle of the park, Nicolas Raskin’s form has seen a major dip, and Rohl is yet to figure out who his best centre-forward is at the Light Blues.

Speaking to the Daily Record on 24 December, Souness said: “The goalkeeper Butland is good, so maybe a centre-half, a left-back, a centre-midfield player and a striker. But that’s a lot of money.”

Youssef Chermiti has been told he can leave Ibrox, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Glaswegian outfit reinvest in a new number nine.

Rohl’s team have scored as many goals as eighth-place Dundee United in the William Hill Premiership this season, and that trend arguably needs to change.

Graeme Souness to be delighted with latest transfer news at Ibrox

Westerlo left-back Tuur Rommens and Wrexham attacking-midfielder Josh Windass have been linked with the Gers.

Rangers seems to already have plans in place to bolster key areas of the squad in the coming weeks, and Rohl will undoubtedly hope to conclude business in the first few days of January.

The Light Blues suffered a bitter blow after losing 2-1 to Hearts at Tynecastle Park, with 12 points now separating the two teams.

While hopes of winning the league title have faded, the Glaswegian outfit still have a chance to compete for second place, and adding quality to the squad will surely help the German manager achieve that.
