James Tavernier reacts as ex-Rangers star Borna Barisic seals emotional return

Borna Barisic hasn’t had much success since he left Rangers last year.

Rangers announced that Barisic would not be signing a new contract at the end of the 2023-24 season, which ended the Croatian’s near six-year stay in Glasgow.

The left-back joined Trabzonspor after he departed from the Gers, where he would go on to make 15 appearances for the Turkish side before leaving on loan in January.

Barisic had a failed loan spell in La Liga with Spanish outfit Leganes, but is now on the move again.

James Tavernier has now reacted to the latest news on his former Rangers team-mate.

James Tavernier reacts as Borna Barisic joins Osijek for third time

Barisic was a top-quality left-back for Rangers over the years, and helped the Bears to a Scottish Premiership title as well as a Europa League final.

The 33-year-old was an outlet for the Gers, providing not only dangerous crosses, but a goal threat in attacking situations too.

A true fan favourite at Ibrox, Barisic is now set for his third spell at Osijek in Croatia, with the former Rangers star posting his move on Instagram.

The Bears’ skipper, Tavernier, reacted by liking the post, showing support for his former full-back partner.

The transfer sees Barisic return to his homeland of Croatia with Osijek, as everyone from a Rangers perspective will wish him well.

Why Rangers’ current left-back situation is a worry

Danny Rohl has chopped and changed his formations so far as manager, but regularly opts to play a five-at-the-back formation.

Jayden Meghoma has worried in recent weeks from left-wing back, a position that he seems to have no other competition.

Gers supporters have been used to seeing a flat back four over the years, but Rohl’s philosophy sees Meghoma take up an advanced role on the left-hand side.

The teenager isn’t showing filling Barisic’s boots at the moment, and a permanent move for the Brentford man seems out of the question.
