Barry Bannan to Rangers verdict shared by insider who knows Sheffield Wednesday star well

Barry Bannan has been touted by fans as someone who could thrive at Rangers.

The Scottish midfielder captained Sheffield Wednesday to a 12th-placed finish in the Championship last season, and has scored several stunning goals throughout his career, with some of them coming during Danny Rohl‘s time in charge.

Rangers are also interested in Josh Windass, a former teammate of Bannan’s who is a reliable goalscorer in the second tier of English football.

Bannan isn’t the profile that Rangers previously targeted in the summer transfer window, and according to ex-Celtic legend Peter Grant, a move for him in January seems implausible.

Barry Bannan unlikely to move to Rangers despite his quality

Kevin Thelwell oversaw a disastrous summer transfer window, spending over £20million for young, unproven players.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show Podcast on 23 December, Grant said that he couldn’t imagine the 36-year-old playing for Rangers.

When responding to a caller who wanted the Bears to sign Bannan, he said: “I know Barry very well, I just can’t see him picking the Blue jersey up.

“He’s a fantastic player, and he’s the sort of man Rangers would need because he can dominate the ball and he plays his position exceptionally well.”

Bannan has previously praised Rohl’s ability as a manager when he was appointed by Rangers.

With Sheffield Wednesday certain to be relegated and in deep financial trouble, a move for the midfielder could be a stroke of genius, even if Grant thinks it won’t happen.

Rangers are in desperate need of experienced players

Of course, it’s not the flashiest signing, but Bannan has been one of the most consistent players in the EFL for the last 10 years.

That’s exactly what Rangers need, as too many of their signings have failed to make an impact upon arrival in Govan.

The team that won the Scottish Premiership under Steven Gerrard in 2020-21 had the likes of Jermain Defoe, Scott Arfield, and Steven David.

They were leaders on the pitch and knew how to turn up because they had done it so often in the past.

Rangers are out of the title race as it stands, and the failed strategy of signing promising players should be put to one side.

Instead, Rohl needs players that he can trust, and Bannan is the perfect example.
