Michael Stewart disagrees with what’s being said about Danny Rohl – ‘Let’s be honest here’

Michael Stewart was shocked to see some fans question Danny Rohl’s future after Rangers lost 2-1 to Hearts on Sunday.

Rohl has renewed the optimism among fans around Govan following Russell Martin’s disastrous reign.

However, it remains clear that Rangers don’t have the squad to compete in a title race this season.

Kevin Thelwell was sacked for spending £20million in the summer transfer window on unproven players, and Rohl is yet to bring in any of his own talent.

Rangers’ defeat to Hearts at Tynecastle leaves them 12 points off the top of the table, and although that is far from good enough, hardly any of the blame can be put on Rohl’s doorstep.

Michael Stewart defends Danny Rohl from criticism

Rohl was criticised for his substitutions against Hearts, with Max Aarons staying on the pitch for the whole match.

Speaking on the Scottish Football Social Club on 22 December, Stewart sympathised with the issues that the German head coach is facing in Govan.

He said: “Let’s be honest here, I can understand why Rohl is getting criticism, but I don’t agree with it.

“He’s put together a cautious approach to try to make sure that they aren’t being opened up each week.

“In doing that, it’s taken an element of the attacking player away, but he doesn’t have the forwards who can make something happen out of nothing.”

Danny Rohl’s record at Rangers

The Bears have been woeful defensively, and Rohl is trying to minimise the threat that other teams can pose to his players.

Having suffered his first league defeat in nine games, scrutiny does seem unfair, and Rohl must be given the time to implement his style and mould the squad to what he wants.

When can Danny Rohl be judged on his results at Rangers?

Domestic success is a necessity at Ibrox, and if Rohl fails to win the Scottish Cup, then a trophyless season won’t look good for his reputation.

This scenario is certainly different, and it is always tough for a manager to join a team that is clearly lacking in confidence mid-season.

Rangers were completely abysmal under Martin, and Rohl has been tasked with cleaning up the mess he made.

In theory, Rohl must come under pressure if Rangers’ season is over by March, and that could be the moment when the majority of supporters start to turn on him.

However, he has got the backing of fans who understand the situation, and it seems implausible that he won’t be given the 2026 summer transfer window to make his mark at G51.
