Steven Gerrard opens door for Rangers return as finger pointed over collapsed recent talks

Steven Gerrard could still take over at Rangers one day after his latest comments.

Gerrard looked primed to return to Rangers after Russell Martin was sacked in October, but talks broke down, and he did not take the role.

Danny Rohl was instead appointed as the new Rangers boss, and the Ibrox faithful were once again left to dream of an eventual return for the Liverpool icon.

Gerrard has now revealed more about the reasoning for the rejection, and it is encouraging for the prospects of him eventually coming back to Govan.

Gerrard opens up further on why he rejected the Rangers job

Gerrard’s concerns ultimately led him to withdraw from the Rangers opportunity, after it looked like he was the frontrunner for the post.

He has opened up on the reasons in an interview with Ally McCoist, revealing that while he wanted to help the club, he did not feel like it was the right circumstances, pointing the finger at the club for the state of the structure.

Speaking on Ally’s Social Club on 22 December, he said: “It’s not that I did not fancy it, because, Rangers is obviously your club more than it is my club, but I have got a special affinity for Rangers now.

“I want to help that club, but you have to have the right tools and the right opportunity to help that club.

“I know how difficult it is, I understand when you put that on your neck and your shoulders, how heavy that is, and you know that more than anyone else.

“If you get the right tools and you have the right people, I have got the confidence to make Rangers good again, but if i’m not surrounded by the right people and I haven’t got the right tools, I’m not a magician, Ally.

“I wish I was.”

Why Rangers could still see Gerrard return to Ibrox

Gerrard constantly brings up his connection to the Gers when the issue of a return to management is brought up, which suggests that there may be unfinished business for the Liverpudlian when it comes to Scottish football.

The idea of the right tools and the right people suggests that Gerrard would return if he felt that the structure that was in place was good enough to have the Auchenhowie outfit fighting at the top of the game.

The 49ers Enterprises group need to keep plugging away at the backroom staff, and hopefully they will have it in the right shape for the 45-year-old, if the job becomes available again.

The fact that he has never closed off the idea of a potential reunion with the Light Blues means that every time the vacancy is available, he will be one of the leading names for the job.

If Danny Rohl cannot get the Bears out of the mire, then they may be looking for a new manager once again in the near future, and that could be the opportunity for Gerrard to step in.

The door seems to still be open.
