Ally McCoist still baffled by one Kevin Thelwell transfer blunder at Rangers

Kevin Thelwell has questions to answer after signing Youssef Chermiti at Rangers in the summer transfer window.

Ally McCoist believes the Portugal Under-21 international isn’t to blame for his current situation, and those who brought him to the Gers should be held accountable.

Chermiti has failed to live up to expectations at Ibrox, and it won’t be long before the majority of fans lose patience with him.

Thelwell and Patrick Stewart were eventually sacked in November, but their unwanted legacies still remain at the Glaswegian outfit for now.

Youssef Chermiti transfer fee doesn’t make sense at Rangers

Thelwell thought it was sensible to spend £8million on Chermiti despite his evident struggles at Everton.

Ally McCoist is “absolutely baffled” to see the Ibrox hierarchy take such a significant financial gamble on a striker who played just around 300 minutes during his two years at Goodison Park.

The 21-year-old didn’t register a single goal or assist during his time at the Toffees, and struggled with multiple fitness issues in Merseyside.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 17 December, McCoist said: “It looks like Thelwell was in charge of the recruitment. That signing has absolutely baffled me. The boy Chermiti, I think, had played 300 minutes in two years. You just can’t be £8m. You just can’t do it.”

The Gers icon added: “To be fair to the boy, it’s not his problem, you feel for him. He looks completely out of sorts. But it’s not his problem. That main problem is why did you sign him in the first place.”

Ibrox News understands Chermiti is attracting interest from Braga, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Glaswegian outfit cut their losses on him sooner rather than later.

Stig Inge Bjornebye to solve Ibrox goalscoring issue with one transfer

Stig Inge Bjornebye will help Rohl plan for the winter transfer window after being appointed as a consultant and advisor by Andrew Cavenagh.

The former Norway international has previously worked as a sporting director for Rosenborg and Danish club Aarhus and will surely bring his expertise and experience to Rangers.

It wouldn’t be surprising to see Bjornebye use his connections in the Eliteserien to sign someone like Tromso midfielder Jens Hjerto-Dahl at Ibrox, and someone like Sarpsborg striker Daniel Karlsbakk should also be on the Gers’ radar after ending the 2025 season as the top goalscorer.

Rohl certainly needs a new striker, but it remains to be seen whether the Light Blues will get one in January.
