Rangers set sights on ‘long overdue’ hire for new head of recruitment as potential arrival named

Robbie Thelwell could be replaced at Rangers sooner rather than later.

Danny Rohl has improved things on the pitch at Ibrox, though Rangers still have a lot more work to do if they are to return to the level that is expected of them.

The main aspect of that will be recruitment, though the Gers also have a handful of improvements to make behind the scenes.

A new head of recruitment ties both of those things together, with a potential candidate named for the role.

Former Rangers star eyed for Ibrox role

Andrew Cavenagh has made several hires throughout his time at Rangers, and it seems as though he is eying another, this time in the form of a head of recruitment.

The candidate for that role is Lee McCulloch, who played for the Light Blues over an eight-year span between 2007 and 2015.

It was reported by Alan Nixon earlier this week that McCulloch was being eyed by Rangers, with David Edgar now claiming that he could become the new head of recruitment, which is a role currently filled by Thelwell.

Edgar, via the Heart & Hand Podcast account on X, described the hire of a new HOF as “long overdue”; when taking into account their recent transfer business, it is a fair point to raise.

McCulloch is currently employed at Brighton, who have found plenty of success through their data-led approach.

McCulloch is who Rangers need to end recruitment experiment

Youssef Chermiti is often hailed as the worst Rangers signing in years, but the truth of the matter is that there have been countless failed moves at Ibrox.

That, alongside several poor managerial apopintments has led to the regression at Rangers, but with Rohl steadying the ship from a results perspective, it’s imperative that the same is done behind the scenes.

Celtic are in freefall under Wilfried Nancy, and if the Gers can make the right calls off the pitch, they can soon regain their status at the top of Scottish football.

The appointment of McCulloch would be a big step in the right direction towards achieving that.
