Pierre Ekwah has ‘amazing’ attribute Danny Rohl would surely love at Rangers
In a bid to get Rangers back into the Scottish Premiership title race, Danny Rohl will be looking to invest in his squad in January.
The Light Blues are looking to undo Kevin Thelwell’s poor summer recruitment, which has ultimately led to a difficult Europa League campaign and inconsistency in the Scottish Premiership.
Central midfield is an area Rohl is targeting for new additions, especially with Nicolas Raskin being eyed by Besiktas ahead of a potential January transfer.
Rangers have been linked with Daylam Meddah from Pau as a possible replacement for Raskin, and he isn’t the only one on their radar.

Tony Mowbray’s verdict on Rangers target Pierre Ekwah
Reports have indicated that Rangers want to sign midfielder Pierre Ekwah next month, seeing the Frenchman as an upgrade on their current options in the engine room.
Ekwah saw his contract with Saint-Etienne get terminated, and the French club are involved in a labour tribunal dispute over the nature of his departure.
The 23-year-old is therefore available to sign on a free transfer, and whilst there are question marks surrounding his qualities, Tony Mowbray has always believed in the midfielder.
During his time managing Ekwah at Sunderland, Mowbray lauded his ability on the ball as ‘amazing’, and that is an attribute Rohl would surely love to have at Ibrox.
“That part of his game is really coming along, and I keep telling him that if he can develop that physical aspect of his game then what a footballer we’ve got because he can do amazing things with his feet,” the veteran manager said of Ekwah in May 2023 via the Chronicle.
“He’s so clever with his feet, you can see how fast his feet are, and he can see pictures.
“He’s a good footballer, so if he can just add the off-the-ball stuff then he’ll be even better. He’s doing exceptionally well.
“He’s a young boy who had never played a professional game before coming to Sunderland. He’d had a lot of U23 football, but you can see the talent and the physicality that he’s got.
“I’m not sure he’s brilliant in the air at the moment, but at least he’s 6ft 1in so he can help us in that aspect of the game as well.”
Ekwah could be worth the gamble
On a free transfer, Ekwah could be worth capturing for multiple reasons.
- He is progressive, ball-carrying midfielder
- The Frenchman is physically strong and versatile
- He can play as a No.6 or No.8
- Ekwah is still young and has development upside and resale value
A dominant figure is what Rangers are crying out for in the middle of the park, someone whose physical strength can inspire them to win the battle.
Physically, Ekwah can handle himself, and Mowbray’s comments also suggest he’s solid in possession, which are two attributes the Gers require.
It will be interesting to see whether Rangers go all out to sign the former West Ham star, as the positives outweigh the negatives, but only if his current contractual situation gets resolved.
