Danny Rohl has huge Rangers challenge after ‘absolutely diabolical’ Ibrox development

Danny Rohl has taken charge of a Rangers team that wasn’t improved in the summer transfer window.

Russell Martin lasted just 123 days at Ibrox after leading the Gers to one of their worst starts in the league campaign.

Rohl has now reignited hopes of winning the William Hill Premiership, and the Light Blues have a chance to close the gap with Hearts at the top of the table to six points with a win at Tynecastle Park on 21 December.

While the German manager has brought the best out of the players at his disposal, there’s still a feeling that the Glaswegian outfit aren’t good enough to sustain a title charge until the end of the season.

Ally McCoist slams Rangers summer recruitment

Ally McCoist has branded the Gers’ summer recruitment as “absolutely diabolical” as Kevin Thelwell arguably weakened the squad.

The Light Blues icon believes that with the likes of Jefte, Ridvan Yilmaz, Leon Balogun, Vaclav Cerny, Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane leaving, the Ibrox hierarchy failed to improve the squad.

Of Thelwell’s 12 signings at the Glaswegian outfit, it could be argued that most have failed to live up to expectations in Govan.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 17 December, McCoist said: “[Rohl] has got a job on his hands because, unfortunately, the recruitment at Rangers has been absolutely diabolical. You haven’t improved the team anywhere.”

Thelwell was eventually sacked by Andrew Cavenagh, with Patrick Stewart also following the former sporting director out the door.

The former Everton chief can have no complaints about his exit as the Gers are undoubtedly worse off this season despite an approximate net spend of £20million in the summer.

Andrew Cavenagh gearing up for busy transfer window after Ibrox development

Cavenagh has appointed Stig Inge Bjornebye in a consultative role ahead of January, with the former Norway international playing a part in the recruitment strategy for the coming weeks.

Rangers undoubtedly need a squad overhaul in the upcoming transfer windows, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see an upheaval within the current team.

Rangers’ five most expensive transfers in the summer

A striker should be on top of the Light Blues’ wishlist, with defensive and midfield reinforcements also needed to suit Rohl’s style of play.

The US consortium weren’t shy about spending money in the summer, and more of the same will likely be needed in 2026 under Rohl.
