Nicky Butt makes ‘best’ Rangers and Celtic admission after what he’s personally experienced

Nicky Butt experienced countless Manchester derbies during his playing days at Old Trafford.

The former England international spent 12 years as a first-team player with Manchester United and also took in spells with Newcastle United and Birmingham City.

Butt has spoken fondly about Rangers fans in the past and was clearly won over when visiting an Old Firm showdown with Celtic.

Indeed, Butt ranks that clash above all others outside of Manchester.

Nicky Butt says Old Firm derby the best he’s attended

Everyone knows just how heated Rangers and Celtic clashes get.

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast with Sam Allardyce, Butt was asked to name the fiercest derby in British football.

Butt initially said he could not look beyond Manchester United versus Manchester City given his links to the Red Devils, but he then went on to add about his experience of watching the Old Firm.

“The best one I’ve ever been to was Celtic versus Rangers,” Butt said.

Celtic beat Rangers at Hampden Park in the most recent meeting between the Glasgow rivals, but bragging rights have been split evenly down the years.

Indeed, it could not be any more even. Across 448 competitive meetings, Rangers and Celtic have won 171 matches each and drawn the other 106.

What did Butt previously say about Rangers fans?

Butt played at Ibrox during his days at United and was clearly impressed by the Gers supporters.

Speaking last year ahead of United facing Rangers in the Europa League, Butt said: ”I played away to Rangers before in the Champions League.

“Rangers will bring a lot of fans down to Old Trafford; the crowds they bring with them are always very passionate and noisy and give them great backing.

Rangers and Celtic fans will certainly be in unison with regards to Butt’s comments. For all the debate about which British derby is fiercest, neutrals always seem to levitate towards the Old Firm.

And supporters of both sides will certainly not need reminding that the clubs are due to face off again in just a couple of weeks’ time.
