Rangers eager to strike Pierre Ekwah deal as messy legal battle ensues

Rangers are reportedly eager to complete a deal for Pierre Ekwah, despite the free agent midfielder being at the centre of a legal wrangle.

Ekwah was linked with Rangers earlier this year, but speculation surrounding a possible move to Ibrox went quiet.

However, Sebastien Denis reported a fresh update via Foot Mercato on Monday suggesting the Gers are very much still in the picture.

That is despite Ekwah being involved in a remarkable development over his contract situation, which is going through the courts.

Pierre Ekwah transfer battle heats up as Rangers one of three in hunt

As per Denis’ report, things are now starting to heat up with regards to a team signing Ekwah.

Rangers are joined by Serie A side Udinese and an unnamed third team in the battle to land the 23-year-old.

A purchase option in Ekwah’s Saint-Etienne contract was activated in August, but that was soon terminated.

Saint-Etienne activated an option to buy after Ekwah’s loan last season, but they did this without the player agreeing to the move.

After the French side rejected several offers in the summer, his camp unilaterally terminated his contract.

Ekwah’s side want to rely on the Lassana Diarra ruling, with several players following the case of the former Real Madrid midfielder after he terminated his contract at Lokomotiv Moscow.

Is Ekwah pursuit worth the fuss for Rangers?

Ekwah also has Chelsea and West Ham – where he failed to make the grade at at a young age – and Sunderland on his CV. Still aged 23, he certainly has time on his side.

The question is no so much whether Ekwah would be a good option for a Rangers side set to undergo another overhaul, but whether it is worth the fuss due to this court case.

It is a messy situation, and one in which could set a precedent for other players. Ultimately, Rangers have nothing to lose in all this.

What the Gers cannot afford to do, though, is wait on Ekwah to join and not have anyone else waiting by.

Given the links in the summer and these fresh ones as January nears, there is clearly something in this and is therefore one to keep a close eye on.
