Derby County ready Joe Rothwell raid after transfer developments at Rangers

Rangers flop Joe Rothwell is of interest to Derby County ahead of the January transfer window.

Rothwell signed for Rangers from Bournemouth in the summer off the back of a positive loan spell with Leeds United in the Championship.

Russell Martin utilised the midfielder regularly before being sacked, but Rothwell continued to struggle for Rangers and was eventually dropped.

Rothwell has now been linked with a Rangers exit and looks destined to find a new home when the winter market opens in less than three weeks.

Derby County are the latest side to showcase interest in Rothwell, as a permanent departure could now be on the cards at Ibrox.

Derby County eye permanent Joe Rothwell deal

Sheffield United are also interested in Rothwell, with Chris Wilder potentially set to bring the Englishman to Bramall Lane in January.

The 30-year-old has shown in recent years that he can operate at a top level in the English Championship, but that hasn’t translated in the Scottish Premiership.

Leeds earned promotion with the midfielder last campaign, and he could now be ready for a second-tier return in the near future.

Alan Nixon reported via his Patreon on 14 December that Derby have made checks over a move for Rothwell ahead of the winter window.

The midfielder wants a move elsewhere to pick up regular first-team minutes and could fit in under John Eustace at Pride Park.

A loan deal has been considered, while a permanent deal could also be possible if the package demanded at Ibrox is low enough to fit within the Rams’ budget.

Rangers could agree Rothwell exit in January

Danny Rohl clearly doesn’t see a future for the midfielder in Govan, so a winter exit would make sense for all parties.

Rangers only paid a fee in the region of £400k for Rothwell, so picking up any sort of fee for his signature would be a plus in G51.

The ex-Blackburn Rovers man would likely welcome any opportunity to get out of Ibrox, and January will likely pose multiple avenues away.

He now has to decide where he sees his future, depending on what offers come in once the market opens.
